  1. Jane Hamsher is on c-span saying the President is going to trash social security.

  2. Father God, I pray a special prayer for the Obamas and the Obama Administration this morning. Lord Jesus I just lift them up to you, and Lord I pray that you keep them from all harm and danger. Realizing Lord God, that these are your People, and that all people belongs to you, because you created us all. Lord jesus, I just feel like praying for all your people, for we all have fallen short of your blessings, so lord God I ask you to help us lord, and give us what we need. Bless us Lord, as only you can. We are leaning and depending on you Lord. Lord I ask that you teach us, and show us how to be obedient. We, the World Is crying out to you, to help us, for you are our Shephard. Thank you Lord. I praise you this morning for all of your goodness. Lord I pray for everyone on this blog, or visits this blog. Lord I thank you for *BWD*, and bless her as you see the need to. Bless us all In your name. Amen ๐Ÿ™‚ ๐Ÿ™‚

  3. Yup. My head is exploding because my husband is listening to her and believing her.

The guy after her, the head of the Southern Baptists, is lying so deftly you’d almost be impressed. He jumps from Al Gore to Obama as if Obama invented the raising of the debt ceiling. No mention of the Bush years, raising the debt ceiling 7 times, and the fact that Bush had a surplus that he blew.

So here’s the frame people — get your progressive talking points ready to refute this crap. I must admit I heard this frame a week or so ago and now it’s everywhere (although with some new evil twists):

What I warned you guys of last week: if there’s a default, there’s “200 bn” that comes in, enough to pay interest and SS. So if Obama CHOOSES to pay anything different, then the collapse of the financial markets is his fault. There’s plenty of money to pay interest and SS.

This guy also covered his ass by laying the groundwork for how awful raising the debt ceiling is. This one, Obama’s got.

However the frame — the default won’t be bad, it’s what Obama chooses to pay that will ruin the world — that’s the frame we need to fight.

NEVER underestimate what Republicans can do. NEVER. I think it BWD herself yesterday who said to get ready for their new talking points, whatever they may be. Here they are.

  5. Jane Hamsher on C-span saying Obama is for Cuts and the Republicans are not, She said that the Republicans want a clean bill and Obama wants cuts. And those democrate who are calling believe this mess. I learn that C-span is an operation of Fox News. Most of the people work there are republicans.

  6. Thanks for the prayer, We do need God help,,the only way to win this fight is with the help of God.

  7. CALL them up!! Get on the phone and take that lie to the trash where it belongs! And while you’re at it, maybe you can get Jane to answer to her dubious paychecks!

  8. Nothing like getting steamed first thing Monday morning:) Call them on the phone!

  9. People are not stupid. cbs poll 71% against the republicans handling of the debt.

  10. 71% of Americans do NOT like the way R’s are handling the debt ceiling talks….that INCLUDES Republicans!! Why do you THINK they’re out there trying to cause a fuss? Their collective heads are spinning around on a stick! They know they have lost voters trust and they have no way out…thus, the lies and extremes!

  11. we gotta keep pushing back, with murdoch and his bunch they are crumbling.

  12. I tried to get through but couldn’t. I didn’t scream (my husband really tunes out when I yell) and explained things to him. He saw nothing wrong in what she was saying, except that she wants to save Medicare. I admit to not having the stomach to listen to her fully, but she didn’t play all of her “Obama sucks” cards, from what my husband said.

  13. God, I detest that woman. I admit to not listening to all of it.

So where’s the ‘clean bill’, Jane? She and Adam Green are siding with Republicans in their fantasy world. Un believable.

  14. I hope the Chamber of Commerce and Wall Street billionaires are pleased with themselves for paying millions of dollars to put these crazy repugs into office. PBO said the other day that every ones taxes will go up if the debt ceiling isn’t raised, he is correct. No more tax breaks for these guys, no oil subsidies, etc. Plus they will all lose when the stock market crashes.

  15. Good morning BWD and TOAITR family. Why does Jane still get on so many places. This is so scary. We must fight to get the truth out there. I still have faith that the American people are waking up to what the repubs are doing.

    Yes we can!!!!

  16. They laid down with dogs, now they’ll get up with fleas! Notice how they haven’t been giving to those R’s running for Pres? They made HUGE profits with this President in charge….I have NO sympathy for any of them. Sucks to be them!

  17. Obama’s won the public, with a good dose of effective messaging and support from Pelosi and DWS as DNC chair.

We cannot coast, not for a minute. I’ve been so pleased with how the Dem’s and the WH have gotten their act together (literally and figuratively) on messaging on the debt ceiling. But they can’t coast.

I hope to see that they now build on what works and get ahead of issues instead of playing defense. I expect to see it. But I’ve seen Dem’s shoot themselves in the foot too much in the past.

That’s the next leg in our march toward a progressive nation — Dem’s need to drive the narrative and not just react.

  18. Frank Schaeffer – His disdain for Murdoch is palpable……

Only Bad People Will Work With Murdoch Now (That We Know What We Know)

Here’s what we also know: Without the “Tea Party” there wouldn’t be far right ideologues in Congress like Michele Bachmann empowered to play Russian roulette with America’s future over the debt ceiling. And without Fox News and the Wall Street Journal there would have been no Tea Party, let alone Republicans “successfully” obstructing the President at every turn.

Who is the sole source of this combination of paparazzi hell tabloid amorality gone wild, sleaze and decadence along with breeding the most extreme right wing politics America’s ever known since the days of radio host and fascist sympathizer Fr. Coughlin?

Where do all these downward paths meet: In the person and career of Rupert Murdoch. And his company has spent tens of millions to settle scores of scandals as is so well documented by the New York Times.

And now the Murdoch scandal has spread from the just closed News of the World to the Sun and the Sunday Times of London. So it is not about “one bad apple” but about Murdoch’s company’s methods across the board, as extensive coverage in the Guardian has proved.

  19. I don’t know, but maybe someone can email C Span with the little diddies that Chips uncovered, and make them make a little “note of that” on the air! I’d pay money for that!

  20. @C-Span is suppose to be non-partisan. So, they should be “challengin'” her or anyone else who appears on the Washington Journal!

They get added to TOAITR/TOD’s ‘Call The Media’ List:

  21. Debz, you will love this analysis from Joy Reid. It’s right in line with your comment…..

The Wall Street party, trapped in the madhouse

Wall Street and big business bankrolled the tea party in order to put tax cut and deregulation-friendly Republicans in control of Washington. Now, theyโ€™re reaping the whirlwind.

When youโ€™re looking for strength in numbers, opening the doors to the madhouse might seem like an efficient way to give your side a numerical and adrenaline boost. But once theyโ€™re out, good luck controlling the crazies.

Big business and Wall Street types were only too happy to fund the โ€œtea party movement,โ€ creating a quasi-grassroots army that turned back the Democratic tide that rich folk feared would threaten their financial interests after 2008. Socialism! Thatโ€™s what they feared, and what better to beat it back than a gang of John Birch Society-minded, Ayn Rand-loving, Constitution-mad libbing, low-information voters who could be programmed with right wing talking points and sent out to โ€œtake their country back?โ€

Well, now the Birchers have enough numbers in the U.S. House of Representatives to challenge the business lobbyโ€™s man in Washington, Speaker John Boehner โ€” who is anything but a tea partier โ€” and their Senate hired hand, Mitch McConnell. And they have, in Eric Cantor, a man cynical and self-serving enough to lead the mad person parade.

  22. Thanks for posting the article. They have put themselves into a box along with the repugs. If they pay for a repug presidential candidate, they will get stuck with these loons in Congress. They must know that if PBO wins, there will be more dems in congress. I have to pity for them, only laughter.

  23. I think we have to push the meme:

Jane Hamsher is an agent provocateur, if not intentionally, then by her actions. She sows discord in the ranks of Democrats and leftists to weaken them. And she is in it for her own personal gain. Three quarters of donations to her PAC Accountability Now go to herself, Glenn and four employees of the PAC (numbers for 2009, see Obama Diary).

  24. As always, Faith, you’re “right on the money”…

  31. I suppose a weird sort of progress has been achieved in that, thanks to the Internet, the mass of men (and women) no longer “lead lives of quiet desperation”, as Thoreau wrote, but rather spew it out in a perpetual clamorous stream, but perhaps this only serves to advance the general level of desperation in the cosmos. I believe everyone should help everyone else, but if you catch their desperation, you become as ineffective as they. Isn’t it best to just let them be and concentrate on banding together with healthy-minded people who believe the world can and will actually improve, even if only incrementally, if we join energies with one another?

    Thanks for postin’ that…

But, here it is, again: ๐Ÿ˜‰

THIS A BIG WEEK FOR THE CONSUMER FINANCIAL PROTECTION BUREAU(CFPB). TODAY, THE PRESIDENT WILL ANNOUNCE HIS INTENT TO NOMINATE RICHARD CORODAY TO SERVE AS THE FIRST DIRECTOR OF THE CONSUMER FINANCIAL PROTECTION BUREAU. On Thursday, the CFPB makes its transition from a start-up to a real, live agency with the authority to write rules and to supervise the activities of America’s largest banks.

RICH WILL BE A STRONG LEADER FOR THIS AGENCY. He has a proven track record of fighting for families during his time as head of the CFPB enforcement division, as Attorney General of Ohio, and throughout his career. He was one of the first senior executives I recruited for the agency, and his hard work and deep commitment make it clear he can make many important contributions in leading it. Rich is smart, he is tough, and he will make a stellar Director. I AM VERY PLEASED FOR HIM AND VERY PLEASED FOR THE CFPB…

  34. Understand what you’re saying…but I think that all of us think it best to have a “two pronged approach” to dealing with all of this. You HAVE to counter the lies..otherwise, we are just adding to, and condoning the bad, lying behavior. NOT ok. When you meet someone either online, or in person…it is an obligation to present the facts of the issue…we know that the media isn’t the slightest bit interested in doing their jobs…they put out slanted/false info daily. We may not change everyone’s mind, but they should have the facts to make their own decisions…which they are getting nowhere else. I think we ARE banded together to make sure that our world improves…that’s the whole point:)

  35. Thanks for posting this. I never go to huff and puff anymore. I know there are some good articles but I know that good people like you will find them and show them to us. Thanks hopefruit2 for all the information to bring to us!!!!

  36. No surprise there. She’s got to do something to pretend she has influence. Her slide toured irrelevance is not going to be pretty.

  37. That is a great video!! I am so impressed there are so many that can put together such great video’s.

  38. Wow. Just wow.

Chris van Hollen on MSNBC — messaging doesn’t get any better than this.

God bless you, Debbie Wasserman-Schultz and David Plouffe and whoever else has taken control of Democratic messaging. I am one happy prag/prog this morning. And that’s a lot to say after I picked up the pieces of my exploded head after Hamsher and the head of the Southern Baptists this morning on c-span.

  39. The funny part is she’s obviously not very good at it. I mean she goes to netroots nation bashes the President and he still gets and 80% approval rating. In her house! Then of course his fundraising numbers really sent her over the edge.

  40. She’s gotten away with it for two election cycles. How 73% of your money goes to administration and nothing for candidates — how is that not raising red flags? Leave it to Jane, however, to take advantage of Citizens United to do whatever she wants to do with people’s hard-earned money.

  41. df, C-SPAN knew exactly what they were doing when the invited Jane H on the show. By bringing her own, it gave them cover for the lier that immediately followed her. C-SPAN has a rightwing cliquish group made up of Steve Skully, Peter and Greada (spelling may be off) and they have been constantly push the rightwing talking points since 2006. They knew that Jane will speak against the PBO not only on SS and MC, but the dept ceiling talks as well.

  42. the 80% was a lot lower than Obama’s approval at Netroots Nation in the past. There is an erosion of support — the question is, how damaging is it?

There’s a new Pew study (I think it’s Pew — I’ll look) that shows what we all assumed — independents do not ‘swing’ from Republican to Democrat, despite CW. ‘Independents’ are made up of either left- or right-leaning partisans. The question is whether they are motivated to vote or not.

Our ‘independents’ stayed home in 2010. Republican-leaning independents voted in droves. This is the point I’m trying to get through to my husband — it was the efforts of Hamster et al. who contributed if not caused these people to not vote. He couldn’t believe it when I told him these people actually TOLD people not to vote unless things were pure enough for them. Yeah, that sent a message alright — it sent the message that progressives are unreliable as a voting block. If only Jerry Falwell had done the same thing in 1982…….

The left, unfortunately, is good at not voting unless they are sufficiently entertained. They can’t see beyond their wish list and have no interest in building the systemic infrastructure needed to change public perception.

  43. Faith shame on you. What did they say? You leave a post like that without any link or transrcipt? LOL!

  44. Stocks are down nearly 150 points this am on debt fear looming near….hey Wall St…how’s that working for you? Idiots.

  45. OK, my brain is not working this AM what is TPV? (With a link I don’t have to think!)

  46. hopefruit2 thanks for lettin’ us know this…

“As the people of the world celebrate Nelson Mandelaโ€™s 93rd birthday on July 18, Madiba continues to be a beacon for the global community, and for all who work for democracy, justice and reconciliation,” President Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama said in a statement, “On behalf of the people of the United States, we congratulate Nelson Mandela, and honor his vision for a better world.”..

  47. The vanishing GOP: symbolic votes and tax cut religion

The fact that Boehner has to let his caucus take so many symbolic but meaningless votes โ€” Defund Planned Parenthood! Defund NPR and Shut Down the EPA!!! An Unpassable Balanced Budget Amendment! Cut, Cap and Balance!!! โ€” shows how little influence he actually wields as speaker.

But it says something deeper about Mr. Boehnerโ€™s party, which is now captive to an ideology that is getting closer every day to being a religion. The text of that religion is provided not by a Bible, but by slogans repeated on talk radio and on Fox News. Gimmicky sounding โ€œsolutionsโ€ to Americaโ€™s problems (Cut, Cap, Balance!) โ€” all of which boils down to a single obsession: keeping taxes on the rich and corporations as low as humanly possible, and preventing those taxes from ever going up.

Grover Norquist has created his very own religion.

  48. “the 80% was a lot lower than Obamaโ€™s approval at Netroots Nation in the past. There is an erosion of support โ€” the question is, how damaging is it?”

Faith I truly believe that this lower approval simply reflects the fact that fewer of the President’s supporters actually attended the NN this year compared to previous years. The NN has been increasingly infiltrated by some Libertarians, and Obama’s supporters have opted to stay away.

  49. Given the cesspool that Daily Koch is, that 80% is strong. If I had $1000 and three day weekend to burn I think it would be much more useful to donate that money to a candidate of my choice and volunteer for said candidate for the three days than head to nutroots nation and listen to hate speech for three days in a glorified Daily Koch circle jerk. I’d say the same thing about the one nation and Stewart/Colbert Washington marches – they don’t matter.

The only march politicians care about is the march of money into their campaign bank account.

  50. Oh look! A “two fer” win in the bs argument with republicans! Oh, and Mr. Intelligencia (Louis Gohmert) says that the debt ceiling date of Aug 2 really is suspicious because PBO’s birthday is on the 4th…and he made up that Aug 2nd date to make his birthday a big bash and everyone can then celebrate his epic win AND his birthday! IF THERE IS ANYONE HERE IN THAT FREAKING WACKJOBS DISTRICT, CAN YOU PLEASE GET THE WORD OUT THAT THE MAN HAS NOT ONLY GONE OFF THE DEEP END BUT HAS TOTALLY LOST HIS MIND AND IS UNFIT TO SERVE HIS CONSTITUENTS! What a total waste of time, and taxpayer money that lunatic is! WTF is wrong with these people? I see the Texas education system is working like a charm dumbing down the masses. I can’t stand willful ignorance.

  51. Yep…Grover created his own religion (what happened to taking no god ….) and THEY ALL SIGNED ONTO IT!

  52. I am beginning to think that everyone just accepts a label as true without questioning when people call themselves a Democrat. I am thinking that some so-called Democrats may be like the “FAKE” Dems that WI put into a Primary run against the regular Dems in the recall election. I think the GOP and/or the monied people have infiltrated both the Dem electorate and the Dem media/talking heads for quite some time. I think they want to destroy their competition from within by self-destruction. I am not usually a conspiracy theory person, but why else would the Left of our party team up with the Republicans?

  53. df, I am with you “I canโ€™t stand willful ignorance.” It is an absolute danger to a demogracy, especially when there are so many in elected office. It’s like the inmates are in charge on the insane asylum.

  54. Yeah you are!

    Summer’s off, Hmmm…

That means you have time to learn how to tweet!

    Right? ๐Ÿ˜‰

    YES.WE.CAN…DO.(Much)More, Together!

  55. I have thought about what stupid constituents some of the GOP legislators have in their districts too. I especially have been thinking that about Eric Cantor’s district. The candidates seem to be shielded against hearing from anyone who is not in their district as I have not found a way in to call or email complaints. I wonder how someone could get the truth out to Eric’s constituents?

  56. I hadn’t thought of that. that’s a great insight! And it’s a big, “duh!”

I know people like Eclectablog had some trepidations about going and he was brave enough to do so. I think you’re absolutely right.

And if that’s true, then the 80% is even a greater number than I thought.

  57. Oh my, this is not good, folks in England are now betting on whether Cameron will be the next to go in the Murdoch scandal.

PoliticalBetting is taking the prospect of David Cameron quitting quite seriously, reports Paul Owen.

The website’s respected guru Mike Smithson reports that Ladbrokes has tightened the price on Cameron’s being the next cabinet member to quit the government from 100/1 ten days ago to 12/1 now. Stan James offers 7/1 against Cameron not lasting the year.

Of the frontrunners to replace Cameron, David Davis represents “outstanding value” at 33/1, and Smithson has put some money down. Boris Johnson is top of the heap at 4/1, despite his not being an MP. Paul’s own tip to replace Cameron would be William Hague, whose reputation and image as a statesman have steadily and markedly improved since he was last Tory leader โ€“ give or take a few embarrassing stories about his sleeping arrangements.

  58. There’s a great deal of coverage on this alleged deal with McConnell/Reid. It’s essentially no different than what we heard last week when it appeared that Reid didn’t know how to take yes for an answer and threw spending cuts into the deal.

As reported — and nothing is confirmed — Obama would have the right to raise the debt ceiling in three increments before the 2012 election, at a total of 2.5 tr (I think I have the number right). repubicans would get to vote against it and keep their Republican creds. No revenue increases of any kind.

Now they may think raising the debt ceiling is a ‘bad’ thing but Obama’s effectively won that argument. So I don’t care about that.

However, all cuts, even if it’s a ‘low’ number of 1.5 tr, is a win for Republicans. I think of the quote from the President from the talks where he said all the pain was on the Democratic side and nothing coming from Republicans. That doesn’t bode well for what these cuts actually are.

To make a long story long, I’m finally getting to my point. Part of the reporting today is whether or not this will be acceptable to Republicans. As if they’re going to vote against it.

republicans are nothing if not shrewd. They have seen how Obama has backed them into a corner with bluffs. They are capable of learning all too well.

I think they’re going to jump at the chance to accept this deal. What is the downside? None for them, that I can see, except the cuts aren’t as deep as they allegedly want.

The very least should be that the debt ceiling is taken off the table until 2013. To leave it hanging, spending cuts only — how is this a win for us?

My point: they may be doing their own version of rope a dope. Saying they don’t like it, and then passing it. Thoughts?

  59. Thanks starm this interview with Congressman Van Hollen obviously is what Faith was referring to. Yes, his messaging was crisp,, clear, concise, and on point. Good swing for the Dems. Hopefully some folks watched it.

  60. hmmm…………….I dunno desert. Sounds like a win win for the Rethugs. If PBO signs this piece of legislation will it be his undoing for 2012? Doesn’t sound good. If the Dems and PBO really have the Teathugs backed into a corner then they should perform like it and get a better deal. Looks like we are headed toward a Aug. 2nd showdown. Who is going to blink first. The Rethugs are doing their own rope a dope and be damn the American people in the process. Time will obviously tell. I really don’t like the McConnel/Reid deal. Senator Reid is showing his age….God love him. Obama/Biden 2012!!

  61. It all depends on what’s cut, and how it’s cut. The fact is that we know nothing of the contours of the deal between McConnell and Reid. And this from TPM:

Little noticed amid dire warnings from Wall Street, and increasing cacophony on Capitol Hill, the investment giant Goldman Sachs issued a report late last week concluding that even if Congress passes a relatively small budget deal when they raise the debt limit, it will still be a promising indication to investors that the U.S. fiscal trajectory will improve over the coming decade.

“[T]he hypothetical $1.7trn agreement we sketch out would meaningfully reduce the debt-to-GDP ratio over the next ten years. The debt reduction would reduce interest expense by more than $300bn, for a total of around $2trn in deficit reduction,” reads the report passed my way by a Wall Street source.

The GOP has completely discredited itself. PBO is winning on his handling of the debt ceiling crisis. Obama and the Dems will get credit for the debt ceiling being raised and for a deal on deficit reduction.

  62. NEW YORK (Reuters) – Ratings agency Moody’s on Monday suggested the United States should eliminate its statutory limit on government debt to reduce uncertainty among bond holders.

You mean the US should behave like every other advanced economy? The devil, you say!

  63. Thanks starm, that was excellent. The rest of the caucus could take lessons from that.

  64. This upthread vid clip was very movin’. It bought tears to my eyes…

  66. The democrats are putting Obama presidence on the line and not their seats with this McConnel/Reid deal. Reid have not been good for Obama, he is part of the reason that the democrats lose the house. reid is a centrist democrat
