“Dramatic increase in the number of small donors to the Obama campaign”

You can’t scare us, and you can’t discourage us and don’t mess with us:

President Obama’s next major fundraising filing will show a dramatic increase in the number of small donors so far this year compared with 2008, his campaign said Saturday.

“We had 180,000 contributors at this point in the last campaign; now it’s well over 300,000,” said spokesman Ben LaBolt in an email previewing the upcoming filing. LaBolt declined to elaborate except to say in his note that the filing will show “small dollar contributors back in greater numbers.”

//

Obama set a high bar in 2008, raising nearly $750 million. Back then, the campaign boasted of the number of small donors who were participating.

The public won’t have a good sense of the fundraising by Obama or other presidential candidates until after the campaigns file their reports with the Federal Election Commission. Those documents are not released publicly until mid-July, but campaigns doing well tend to leak their numbers early.

In advance of the end-of-the-month deadline for the upcoming report, all of the campaigns are hustling. Obama campaign manager Jim Messina sent an email to supporters Saturday saying, “A lot of people out there are wondering whether this campaign can inspire the kind of grass-roots support that has been the foundation of our success. A lot of people out there are already saying we can’t. So we’ve got something to prove.”

  1. I’m up early this morning. They are looking not only for the amount of money, but also the number of donors. So tho I don’t have much right now, I know my little bit will help.

    Good morning, all.

  2. Not first….oh well. it’s okay.

what is not okay is that I simply can’t donate. Not because I don’t have the money but because of my husband. I believe his extreme dislike for PO grows each day. We are in Fairfax, VA for the weekend (actually traveling this morning to Chesapeake, VA). A comment was made yesterday at a party about politics and he got his “dig”/”put down in. I am wrestling with bringing subject up as we ride today—-asking WHY he hates/dislikes PO so much……how he thinks PO’s values, both personal and for the country, are so different from his……..what has PO done that is SO awful for our country……how does he think a MCcai/Palin tema would have handled ALL the BIG crises PO has had to deal with…….I just don’t get it!!!! So sad……and he is one of millions.

  3. Good morning. It’s great news to see so many are donating to the campaign. I’ve been going to the website to donate because I need things like bumper stickers, buttons and tee shirts for my team. I love the beautiful blue color this year. I hope we double the contributions by Thursday night! Have a great day and I hope you had a fantastic birthday yesterday.

  4. If you can send a money order on your own – even for $5 – tho not a lot of money, it will add to the number of small donors and their list of supporters they know they can count on.

  5. Rather than grab the newspaper, I look and see what bwd and chip has on their websites.
Now, I can cancel my newspaper subscription!
Thanks for saving me 15 dollars per month.

  6. Also, between chip and bwd- 156 small donor contributions= 6150 dollars..

You both will get my donation on Friday!

    Great job you money bundlers!

  7. Washington post semi hit piece- obamas ties to clean energy factories raises eyebrows!

    What is wrong with that?

So, bush had ties to dirty energy factories! Next!

  8. TP exclusive

As the Republican presidential candidates tour Iowa hoping to lock up the 2012 nomination, they will hear an assortment of questions on energy policy. Some of them, ThinkProgress has learned, will be planted by the oil and natural gas lobby to steer the candidates toward pro-Big Oil policies.

    /

Rather than being a grassroots organization, the Iowa Energy Forum is a slick, new creation of the oil and gas industry. The group is financed by the American Petroleum Institute, a trade association representing Chevron, ExxonMobil, BP, Transcanada, Shell Oil, and other oil industry heavyweights.

    http://thinkprogress.org/green/2011/06/25/252591/oil-industry-astroturfing-2012/

  9. Morning, I’v received by Obama coffee mug and I hope that counts as a donation in this number count. I’m donating $5 today because payday is not until Thursday which I will donate again then.

  10. By the way, why can I post on wordpress and my screen name comes up but for the life of me I can’t figure out how to get a picture in my avatar?

  11. Here in NY, we are bombarded by oil company TV ads. The latest being to promote oil sands, the dirtiest form of oil known to mankind.

  12. congress critters, who ****ed to nut n yahoo are cowardly hypocrites.

Now, six Members of Congress have written a letter to U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton asking her to ensure the safety of Americans on board aid flotillas to Gaza. The Members note that while Israel has every right to defend itself, that the measures it takes must “conform to international humanitarian and human rights law” and that the U.S. must also work to protect its own citizens:

    http://thinkprogress.org/

So they kneecap their own president publicly while favoring another country’s warmonger and yet are now show boating, that too in a cowardly manner, about their “concern” for american citizens.

  13. Good morning I gave a bit yesterday and love giving thru BWDs page.
I hate reading about the millions in hate ads going out already. I know I won’t be able to stand too much of it.
Our county is organizing every precinct. Mine hadn’t been organized in a while and now I am precinct chair! I hope I can do a good job. I’ve never done anything like this.
Maybe I can go to the convention her in Charlotte.

  14. Snowbird,

You will do great, and thanks!

I was thinking thatcwhen Madcow or the msm dissed the president, the bestcway we can say his base is alive and kicking is through donating and volunteering!

Looks like I am not the only one that feels that way?

So, keep it up, msm, thus constant bashing of the president motivates us more…

  15. Well it’s the Bachman Sunday morning show. Yuck!

We know, we know! Get rid of the EPA- obama is a socialist and he is a failure blah blah blah!

  16. On the issue of fighting the PL and the media, etc with their anti-Obama crap, I would just want to make a point that I believe that Obama and Biden and other leaders learned what works/doesn’t work in the 2010 mid-terms. As happy as we were with POTUS making the righteous “don’t give them the keys back” pitch against Republicans that message did not work well with the Independent voter.
We have to keep in mind that all Democrats will come back and vote Democrat in 2012 even for if their pet cause isn’t being addressed by POTUS. However, the target voter is the Independents that we needed in 2010 and will need again in 2012. The Independent voter never responds well to partisanship by either party, for whatever reason. In fact so much so that a partisan message will cause them to either not vote or vote for the other party. That’s why they are Independent. 
So don’t be surprised if POTUS, VPOTUS, and other Dems don’t “fight back” against hits by the PL and Republicans and the media, like we would like them to. They need to just stick to their message of what is working that they’ve already done (health care and ending the wars), jobs and nation building in the US. And we need to support them in this type of campaign versus always complaining that they aren’t “hitting back”. The long game, as POTUS always reminds us, not the 24 hour news cycle.

  17. Yup. Indies, latinos and the yung;uns should be our target. I am sure Plouffe is working on them right now. It was smart of him to raise the expectations on the no. of donors this month. tSart driving the narrative early on.

Yesterday, SR had a brilliant idea of selling T-shirts with “one in a million” slogan. Hope someone here can take to the campaign team.

  18. I agree most of this comment but we must also remember there were many factors why the 2010 midterms went the way it did . I think our POTUS rhetoric was on point but the indies and many old people got more caught up in MSM telling them DEMS are bad, the Teaparty is awesome and the PL telling liberals not to vote, that will show “Obama”. Also there were many messy Dems (blue dogs) who needed to be let go anyway…. There are just many gray areas to think POTUS rhetoric is the reason why indies went the way they did.

  19. Me too , we only read the funnies on the Sunday paper, and no more Sunday talk shows.
Happy Sunday everybody to small donors A BIG THANKS , and let’s not STOP .
bwd i HOPE YOU HAD A WONDERFUL BIRTHDAY , and continue to have a little fun.

  20. I don’t watch sunday shows anymore. Thats the best way to let them know i don’t approve of their reporting.

  21. You’re too funny…🙂🙂🙂

Me, myself, I don’t watch those Sunday shows.

So, I’m glad you watch ’em so I don’t have to watch ’em!😉 lol

  22. Maureen dowd newest op Ed I guess is saying that the President is in denial about being GAY!

Ahhhh, the pl, can’t live with them and, well, you can’t live with them!

  23. And, each and everyday, you help w/that endeavor…

You find those very interestin’, helpful, positive, encouragin’ news stories (from WH and other news sources) which aren’t covered by the U.S. mainstream media!

So, WE want to thank you!😉

    YES.WE.CAN…DO.(Much)More, Together!
    I’M IN…FIRED UP & GOIN’!😉

  24. There is a diary on this at the The daily gos on the rec list. That place really has went off the deep end. I really believe they have been infested with trolls.

  25. Yeah, isn’t that somethin’…

  26. Snoopy, Is that your personal info, and do you want that out there for everyone to see?
Just want personal info to be safe from prying eyes.

  27. Heard on the local news: 7 million dollars invested in the Everglades to repair the aging damns.

Paid for by the recovery act…

  28. What she wrote is her usual piece of shit, but she didn’t say that the President is in denial about being gay. Let’s not make stuff up. This woman is a real b**** as it is.

  29. No personal grassroots fundraisin’ site!

    That’s me…

But, it’s a email from Jim Messina!

I was hopin’ it wouldn’t show any personal info…Darn it!

By the way, BWD could you delete that link and part of amk for obama’s comments!

    Thanks!😉

  30. Bwd: the title, the title and the title of her article, Obama come out of the closet!

    Hello?

    Can you hear me now?

  31. I haven’t watched Sundays shows for some time. Instead I’d rather spend time doing more important things like clean, spend time with friends, etc,

  32. It’s still a hit piece. It points out some poor judgment on the part of the Energy Department. And yeah, it’s kind of whiny from the competitors…one has to ask who they donated to. I think we would find that the companies and their employees donated to McCain. Now they’re unhappy because they backed the wrong horse. It is massively hypocritical to imply any wrong-doing for Obama to single out companies who contributed to his campaign for visits. And if the GAO could only find problems with five of the companies, that’s a far better track record than any previous administration. I do wish they had been more careful about their choices for grants and loans. On the plus side, it highlights once again what a walking stimulus our President is. http://goo.gl/Pulex

  33. Yeah Debz, it is…

    No, I didn’t want that!

I thought it wouldn’t show up on here…Darn it!

Hopefully, BWD can/will delete that link and part of amk’s comments!

And, I want to thank you for your concern! ::Mwah::

    YES.WE.CAN…DO.(Much)More, Together!
    I’M IN…FIRED UP & GOIN’!😉

  34. It’s hardly a leak, Jovie. All that stuff is part of the public record. The GAO report, the President’s trips, the CBO report, the Recovery Act, the planned IPO for that one company. All anyone had to do was research it.

  35. Oh please, don’t be a child. No one who reads this article can think that this is what she means. The article is her usual bullshit, but she doesn’t say that the president is gay. Come on.

  36. This is exactly it. Even $5 is very helpful because it also is another “small donor” added to the total. There is a huge “strength in numbers” effect with small donors. Folks might think $5 is nothing and not bother, but one million of these small donors and all of a sudden that’s $5M a month – which would be $85M raised by November 2012, and that’s just if all folks gave $5 a month.

  37. Excellent work, Snowbird. I encourage everyone to find out who their Precinct Captain is and offer to help. It’s all about the Precincts, people. And if you’re Canadian, help out with repealing the HST.

  38. I really don’t want a play-by-play of the Sunday shows. Can’t we finally get over that addiction? They are utterly worthless and only play to the 65+ crowd.

  39. No, the goal was raised to 550,000 yesterday. Since that is an odd number, I knew they’d already surpassed the half-million mark before they sent the email.

  40. One is small donors and one is all donors I believe. The 650K number will include the big money donors who have maxed out, 450K goal is small donors.

  41. I forgive you! ::Virtual Hug::

    Me too…

But, hopefully, there’s an answer to that mystery/confusion!😉

  42. Good morning everyone.

FORUS50 – The problem I have with some “independents” is that they are ill informed. It’s not just that they don’t like “partisanship”, IMO. If they were “CLEAR” on the issues, they wouldn’t swing like a pendulum. The reason recalls and referendums are occurring in many of the states where Republican Governors and legislatures were elected is because far too many people hadn’t been paying attention. They believed the Republican hype, but hadn’t paid attention to what the Republicans were actually DOING (or NOT DOING) on a national level, e.g., filibustering almost every bill put forth by the Democrats in the Senate. Or else they had ADHD. The other problem was that far to many Democrats sat out the elections, as the numbers clearly show.

Now the Republicans are engaging in VOTER SUPPRESSION. Some states are trying to get rid of early voting; not allowing students to use student ID’s; not allowing registration and voting on the same day; and requiring people to have state issued ID’s. There are law suits in many states attempting to stop this suppression. Unfortunately, in a few of these states, laws have already passed that will make in much harder for people to vote. My suggestion is if you live in one of the states, e.g., Wisconsin, Michigan, Indiana, New Jersey, Florida, etc. please, work with whomever (or start a group) who will see to it that people register LONG before it’s time for the election. Of course there’s always DIEBOLD voting machines and I consistently worry that the tampering that occurred in the past with these machines could happen again. But I don’t know what can be done about DIEBOLD.

  43. I cancelled my newspapers subscription a year ago Jovie. The Columbus Dispatch is a RIGHTWING propoganda-fest. I will be donating $50 to the “Have a dinner with PBO” Extravaganza. Going to donate tomorrow to add to the totals.🙂

  44. Thanks, Tien Le, for that explanation…

These days, things *CAN* happen at a speed of light!

So, you have to “hold on to your hat!”🙂

  45. So the R’s in Congress want to defund solar now?http://www.azcentral.com/business/articles/2011/06/26/20110626solar-power-congress-funding-cuts.html AS a cost saving measure? That doesn’t even make any sense! What about all the innovation/$$$ already put to good use? That will be wasted. I have always said that they are so shortsighted, but it seems more and more that as well as being shortsighted, they flat out can’t THINK…..unless their pockets get lined first. This can’t happen…we’ve come too far. WIW, Jovie….any other news on this?

  46. I sleep in on Sundays so I don’t watch the Obama-Hate Sermons they call Sunday Political Shows. I enjoy the peace and quiet in the morning laying in bed.

  47. No she does’nt. she wants him to come out for gay marriage. just a attention ploy

  48. Great point FORUS50. After further analysis the 2010 debacle was more independents voting Rethug than Dems not showing up, although that didn’t help either. This will be a WAR for independent voters in the 2012 election. Both parties’ base will come out to vote. We need to attract the swing voters. The administration has already anticipated a VERY difficult and vicious campaign from Right in 2012.

That being said BUCKLE up your BOOTSTRAPS folks its going to be a BUMPY RIDE!!🙂 KEEP HOPE ALIVE!!! Obama/Biden 2012!!

  49. Hi Jovie
When Tumulty posted on twitter I let her have it betw the eyes. So oil & gas are whining and WP has to do an article. No wonder they are losing readers and rightly so. She hates when I twittr her, she tries to snark but she is not good enough.

  50. Great points with that sabreen60. You forgot to mention Ohio as well. Teagov Kasich is working on passing voter supression legislation here as well. The infamous Diebold voting machines were very easily manipulated in 2000 and 2004 to give Bush those victories. Actually the Supreme Court handed Bush the Whitehouse in 2000. The Rethugs will stop at nothing to WIN power in 2012!! We are going to have to have a groundswell of support from the ground up to win this one. We won’t have the financial resources that the Rethugs will have with all their hidden sub groups. Its going to be tough folks. Strap them up!!

  51. Hi Charmed
That was one of the smart things the O campaign did last time. They kept control of their merchandise so they could count each one as a contributor but also get their person info i.e email, add, etc..Smart HillBill complained but FEC said it was not illegal. He is always 2 steps ahead.

  52. desertflower please let us not be in DENIAL. The Teapublicans want POWER and in order to get it the economy must TANK. They have no interest in creating investments for jobs in the future or creating clean energy to save on the use of expensive and destructive fossil fuels.

Every move they are making is a move to sabotage the ECONOMY. WAKE UP AMERICA!!

  53. Almost the entire congress has some Jewish interest either heritage or money. They are disgraceful especially the show they put on for BiBi. But I will bet my last dime that Plouffe and PBO have something instore for them. They are as stupid as he is smart.

  54. there a few comments on clark’s diary on gos calling President Obama a homophobic. There are actually some sane commenters HR’ing it.

It goes to show how much of the PL in gos is basically cult-like and fantasy driven.

  55. Jovie, MODO is being hyperbolic, but she means that the President is not being forthright about his beliefs about same-sex marriage, and therefore needs to “come out of the closet” so to speak. She also used the term “bi” to refer to “binary” whatever the hell she’s trying to say. But the point is she is not referring to his sexual orientation; she’s simply using the term in an attempt to be clever – which she is not. She comes off sounding like a 12-year old middle-schooler experimenting with puns and other forms of play on words that they learnt in expository writing class.

  56. It just goes to show that Clark is internally unhappy and angry (like his pal Choi), for reasons not related to same-sex marriage per se, and they are misdirecting their anger at the President. It’s turning into an unhealthy obsession for them.

  57. I know that, Keith…no denial going on here.Just found their “rationale” for wanting it done really out there. Cost saving measure? They are idiots.

  58. Sorry to get preachy, but isn’t that kind of like saying all Jewish people are bankers or something similarly stereotypical? Jewish people who contribute to members of Congress are just as American as the rest of us. Not all Jewish Americans or Israelis are on the same page politically, either.

I like to think we have enough going for us that we don’t have to put down an entire group to win a point for one side or the other.

Also, I’m pretty sure PBO and Plouffe are working toward the betterment of our country, not just to show they have “something in store” for those who disagree with some of their policies, at home or abroad. President Obama has proven that to me, time and time again.

    End of sermon!

  59. Lets report more positive NEWS and blogs folks. That is what BWD is all about. Our society is ADDICTED to a NEGATIVE narrative. I’m tired of hearing about negative posts from other sites, bloggs, and message boards. I already know that their is HATE for our beloved Prez with the PL, some Dems, and of course the Teapublicans. We need to focus are energy on positive actions toward President Obama’s re-election. Lets do this PEOPLE!! BTW I just donated another $50 to the Obama for America and have entered the Dinner contest. KEEP HOPE ALIVE!! Obama/Biden 2012!!

  60. Guys, can we please stop spreading Daily Kos garbage here? I feel like I need to ask this once in a few weeks. Please, leave that poisoned place out of here.

    Thanks.

  61. I understand desert. That denial remark was more for America. We have 15 months to awake the masses to what the Rethugs are actually trying to do. It is inconceivable that a party that waves the FLAG and touts PATRIOTISM to NO end is behaving in this manner to gain POWER. Absolutle revolting. They have voted against legislation that they have long since supported. You are correct they are idiots and if the American people really understood what was going on PBO would win in a landslide. KEEP HOPE ALIVE!!! Obama/Biden 2012!!

  62. The truth is, I’m am sure this won’t be published but that’s okay its the truth away. There are a number of homosexuals who are plain and simple racist. They hate African-Americans with such vile evil that borders on the unnatural. There is a spiritual war going on and I believe President Obama is in the middle of it; it is up to him to decide each side he is going lead on because the Lord God will win, its just a matter of time.

  63. Exactly BWD. Read my post above. You have created a safe haven for us diehard Obama supporters and we greatly appreciate it. We love you BWD. 🙂 FWIW….since when does a sitting Prez who just oppointed a Transgender Judge and has repealed a discriminitory military law toward gays and has Gay personnel in his administration can be considered HOMOPHOBIC? Absolute insanity!! The true and level headed Libs/Progressives must come out and let their support for PBO be known. KEEP HOPE ALIVE!! Obama/Biden 2012!!

  64. Yes, there is a spiritual war going on Lorraine. I have associated with homosexuals and some caucasion homosexuals for some reason are very racist. As much as they love to tie their civil rights plight with the civil rights movements of the 1960’s on race you’d think they would have more compassion for differences in Gods people. PBO has also bolstered hate crime legislation for gays as well as different ethnic and racial groups.

It is sad that Rachel Maddows, Dan Choi and the rest are leading this anti Obama bashing parade in the LGBT community. I wonder if they really believe that Romney, Gingrich, or Bachman will support their causes. The Teaparty would not allow it. These people are doing their darndest to try and divide the support of PBO. He is getting hit from all angles in our society. WOW!!

  65. yes! I can’t stand the breathless, hyperbolic, “so and so said this” that is all too common here–we should be putting our energies to better use.

  66. Reading the posts this morning, maybe some people woke up on the wrong side of the bed.

May I remind you all, we are all on the same team. Lol!

  67. Nice points Kelly. I like these reasonable and thought out posts. Very engaging and enlightening.🙂

  68. I hear ya…

    You’re very welcome!

    And, you shouldn’t have to continuously say that…Maybe, s/he have a short-term memory/selective hearin’ problem?😉 lol

    YES.WE.CAN…DO.(Much)More, Together!
    I’M IN…FIRED UP & GOIN’!😉

  69. Kryptonite implies we have a weakness she can exploit. It’s more like she’s soiled diapers around here. We just don’t like the smell.

  70. Thanks amk. Hey folks I was just thinking……PBO might not be running in a primary, but with the constant attacks from both the left and the right it seems that he is anyways. He might have to spend a little more money than anticipated for a sitting Prez with no party challenger in order to protect his administration from the FIREPOWER of his enemies.
I can see why these early donation drives are so IMPORTANT. KEEP HOPE ALIVE!! Off to work folks. Hopefully I can chat a little later during some down time at work. PEACE!!🙂 Obama/Biden 2012!!

  71. Tnmtngirl, I so understand what you are saying. Most of my family does not like President Obama. It breaks my heart. But, at least I don’t have to live with them. That would be even harder. Actually, their rants during the 08 election are what got me motivated to become very active with OFA. Little do they know!! I wish you the best.

  72. Hey, are they aiming for the number of donors or donations? It might be a bit trivial but if anyone plans to give, say, 50 dollars, they might be able to give 25 twice or something if their goal is to have a large number of donations. But the main thing is that people are contributing, I suppose.

  73. The link worked, we will have to be ready to pound our elected officials that we want these solar programs to remain. They are in recess now, so lets pester them.

  74. MAUREEN WHO? I never read her crap, and stop clicking on the Orange site they are loosing their fricking minds, so Thanks to BWD for this wonderful site,

  75. It seems that I’m one of the few on here that is not a Christian. I happen to have very different beliefs and practices of Christianity but I still have a lot of respect for Obama and believe he is a great man. Politics is a rough field to be in, especially if your the president of the United States and that president happens to be black.

I think that gays can indeed be racist as a matter of fact I was a care giver at one point in time to a man who was gay and he was very racist. He hated asians and had some problems with blacks. The fact that he hated to be discriminated against was more than a little hypocritical. I also have a friend whose sister happens to be lesbian who happened to have lesbian friends that were rather racist or disliked Obama because they felt he was ‘UnAmerican.’

So I know for a fact that gays like anyone else can be just as prejudiced against those of color. Part of this may stem from many in the black community that have expressed a hatred towards gays or it could very well have to do with old fashioned upbringing and either way it doesn’t excuse it.

I think that people like Choi are ones who have a complete bias against Obama because they just can’t stand him for political reasons or have a very narrow vision of what they want and if they only go part way its not good enough. Choi doesn’t see the other side or looks at the other side as just the same as Obama and believe me when I say he couldn’t be more wrong but I suspect by the time he realizes that it will be too late.

  76. For some reason none of my posts show up on the bottom, they are about 10 comments away from the bottom, lets hope this one is in the right place.

  77. It’s because BWD needed to delete some posts because personal info was posted by mistake, and then she moved posts that were also in those reply threads to the bottom of the page. Basically WP mucks things up when you try to delete and rearrange/repost things. It’s a glitch.

  78. Yeah, I was starting to get worried when I saw it was only at 380K. I should know better than to doubt Obama’s team.

  79. [PRESIDENT] OBAMA’S QUIET REVOLUTION: As the pundits scream, THE PRESIDENT *WAS/IS* REVITALIZING GOVERNMENT

… one extremely consequential area where Obama has done just about everything a liberal could ask for—but done it so quietly that almost no one, including most liberals, has noticed. OBAMA THREE REPUBLICAN PREDECESSORS WERE ALL COMMITTED TO WEAKENING or even destroying the country’s regulatory apparatus: THE ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION AGENCY (EPA), THE OCCUPATIONAL SAFETY AND HEALTH ADMINISTRATION (OSHA), and the other agencies that are supposed to protect workers and consumers by regulating business practices. NOW OBAMA IS SEEKING TO REBUILD THESE BATTERED INSTITUTIONS. In doing so, he isn’t simply improving the effectiveness of various government offices or making scattered progress on a few issues; he is resuscitating an entire philosophy of government with roots in the Progressive era of the early 20th century. Taken as a whole, Obama’s revival of these agencies is arguably the most significant accomplishment of his first year in office…

… Obama’s regulatory appointments could not be more different—no surprise given that he is the son of two social scientists (one of whom attempted to introduce scientific administration to Kenya) and that he once worked in academia himself. Indeed, the flow of expertise into the federal bureaucracy over the past year has been reminiscent of what took place at the start of the New Deal.

For instance, as a replacement for Foulke at OSHA, Obama chose David Michaels, a professor of environmental and occupational health at George Washington University. In 2008 Michaels published a book, Doubt Is Their Product: How Industry’s Assault on Science Threatens Your Health, detailing how businesses had delayed regulations by “manufacturing uncertainty” about scientific findings.

To manage the EPA, Obama appointed a slew of highly experienced state environmental officials. His choice to run the agency was Lisa Jackson, a chemical engineer who led the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection. Her deputies include the former secretary of the environment in Maryland, as well as the former heads of the Connecticut Department of Environmental Protection, the Massachusetts Bureau of Resource Protection, and the Arizona Department of Environmental Quality.

Meanwhile, Obama chose as his Food and Drug Administration (FDA) chief Margaret Hamburg, who achieved renown during the 1990s as health commissioner of New York City, where she developed a program for controlling tuberculosis that led to a sharp decline in the disease. Jonathan Jarvis, Obama’s director of the National Park Service, is a 34-year veteran of the agency—and the first biologist to lead it. And his new administrator of FEMA is W. Craig Fugate, who performed outstandingly as Jeb Bush and Charlie Crist’s head of emergency management in Florida. Fugate may not know anything about Arabian stallions—but he does know a thing or two about hurricanes.

THE UPSHOT OF APPOINTING THE RIGHT PEOPLE—and giving them enough funding, as Obama is working to do—IS THAT THE REGULATORY AGENCIES ARE ONCE AGAIN ABLE TO SERVE THEIR INTENDED PURPOSE. Already, it is possible to discern signs of progress. In her first year at the EPA, Jackson granted California a waiver to impose tougher greenhouse-gas standards for new automobiles, which the Bush administration had denied. She declared that the EPA would set standards for greenhouse gases under the Clean Air Act. And she accepted the EPA staff’s recommendations for tougher smog standards—recommendations that had been rebuffed by the previous EPA head. Science, it seems clear, is back in command at the EPA.

At OSHA, the Bush administration, with the support of Republicans in Congress, had repealed the rules governing ergonomic injuries (which account for 30 percent of compensation claims filed by workers). OSHA even eliminated the column in the reports that companies file where such injuries were supposed to be listed. Obama’s OSHA immediately restored the column and is working on a new national regulatory standard for these injuries.

During the Bush years, there was growing evidence that diacetyl, an artificial flavoring used in making popcorn and other food, was causing severe lung illness among workers exposed to it. Foulke refused to take action, declaring the extensive science documenting the link to be “murky.” Moreover, Foulke failed to develop standards governing silica dust—which has also been linked to lung ailments. Obama’s OSHA is moving ahead on both fronts. In October, OSHA also levied its largest fine ever, requiring BP to pay $87 million for a 2005 explosion that killed 15 workers in Texas…

Yet history rarely moves in leaps and bounds, and, by just about any reasonable standard, OBAMA’S APPROACH TO REGULATION HAS BEEN EXTREMELY IMPRESSIVE…

It’s possible, however, that politics may soon intrude. In 1993 Clinton, too, attempted to revive the regulatory agencies by appointing well-qualified personnel and increasing funding. But, after Republicans took control of Congress in 1994, they managed to cut Clinton’s budget proposals and delay or block the implementation of regulations. If Democrats lose Congress this November, the same thing could happen again. In that case, what has been Obama’s most significant achievement to date would come to naught…

[But, there’s a difference…Obama isn’t Clinton! And, the TeaPublicans don’t have the majority in the Senate!]

Durin’ the Reagan/Bush I/II ERAs, the federal agencies were “gutted,” defunded, “demanned” (Is there such a word? ;)), and “Bush-burrowed!”

And, it continues, today, under the TeaPublican-controlled House. So that, they can continue to malfunction!!!

That’s why WE have to VOTE ‘EM OUT!

  80. Yes it is…

It’s very upliftin’ and encouragin’…Civil rights movement *IS* ongoin’!

  81. there are several LGBT people who have hatred towards the black community. They cite the fact that “80% of blacks” voted yes on prop 8.

Also, tracy morgan and Martin Luther King’s daughter Berniece has said anti-LGBT remarks.

  82. You came very close to the edge here. I’m Jewish and it hit me.

Being Jewish and American does not equate to money (although you did not actually say that). And most important, being Jewish and American does not automatically make you a supporter of the way Israel has conducted itself, AIPAC does not represent the majority of American Jews. And even if it did, assuming all Jewish Americans are on the same page politically or economically is not accurate.

  83. I had such hopes of Christiane Amanpour but it is clear that ABC gives marching orders to their alleged ‘liberals’ so that their corporate-coached brand of liberalism is what Americans think it is.

    Despicable.

  84. I’m afraid I have to disagree. ‘Independents’ are not turned off by partisanship or they wouldn’t have voted so heavily for Republicans in 2010. Republican partisan rhetoric drowned out the nuanced Democratic explanations and Democrats lost. These voters are not truly independent but are unengaged and believe the last, easy thing they’re told. They want the easy answer and if they can’t tell the difference between Republican and Democratic policies then we have to remind them. Because they forget.

Feingold tried a non-partisan, keep-the-gloves-on approach in WI in 2010 and he lost miserably.

It was precisely the Democratic vacuum of a strong message that contributed to the losses of 2010. Just a list of accomplishments does not equate to Big Ideas, like Republicans are so good at doing. Republicans framed the health insurance mandate (a Republican idea until Democrats incorporated it) as the enemy of Freedom, added a good dose of fear and they had a lethal but winning combination. Democrats gave a neat little laundry list of what ACA would do for them — in the future. It wasn’t until a few days before the election that Democrats finally came up with the idea that “freedom from ruin from one illness” would be more effective than a list with no context.

2010 taught us that Americans have surprisingly short memories and we must aggressively help them remember.

  85. Thanks for all the posts above in reply – I’ve been out of the house on such a gorgeous day and just got back. All really good thoughts on the issue and I agree with most all. Just to clarify; I wasn’t intending to state that the message alone was the reason for the midterm losses – clearly there were lots of other factors that contributed to it and the good news is that it could have been worse (for example, if POTUS hadn’t worked like crazy to rescue Harry Reid and a few others who can’t win without him).

I do agree that the Independents can largely be uninformed but I think perhaps not at a higher percentage that that of the Republican or Democrat voter groups. There are way too many of both who just vote as their parents did. It would be an interesting study to see which party was the most uninformed on current political events. If I was a pollster I would love to have fun coming up with those questions and doing the polling. So educating and informing them without appearing to be negative about the other side is unfortunately what has to be done to get their vote. Just like in the live reactions to the debates, whenever McCain or Obama would sound positive and inclusive, the insta-graph would trend to high favorables.

  86. He’s done more for LGBT rights than all the Presidents before him combined. You want to be unhappy with the base, so be it. But when it goes to calling him homophobic, that is utter trash.

Are they going to be happy with even a mroe right wing judiciary that will set back their rights at least a generation? What the hell is wrong with these people?

I had a good discussion with a gay friend who was saying “Illinois sucks!” because they have civil unions and not marriage, like New York. He was married in MA, now Illinois recognizes all of his rights as a married person.

I try to be really careful how I say things. I asked him to celebrate the progress and then press for more. Be ever mindful of what rights will be LOST if we suppress even one vote in 2012, how easily the clock can be turned back with no promise of moving it forward again. He was receptive, if not happy.

  87. Good points but on Fiengold I would disagree. He was 20 points down because he did nothing to help his cause; didn’t start campaigning at all until very late and the worst thing was he lost a ton of support by voting against financial reform. He did TERRIBLE in the debate and was just caught flat-footed. By the time he thought about going negative it was too late anyway. Had he been able to campaign about what he had done to reign in the big banks and credit card reform and caring for Main Street instead of Wall Street, he would have stood a chance.

However your larger point of reminding them of the differences between Democrat and Republican that can and should be done without making someone feel sorry for the other side. POTUS did a great job explaining how he was different than Bush without really sticking it to him the way many (including me) wanted him to do.

  88. I got a T-shirt…

But, I should have gotten a mug, too!😉

  89. I am a non-religious Jew. And I happen to agree with President Obama, who finally said what others should have. There is going to have to be land swap for peace, even if Israel won the land after being attacked.

There are many Arabs living and working in Israel. But the far right wing of their government is as crazy as the right wing here.

God help us if they gain control of this government.

  90. I gave up on Sunday shows. In fact, I am about ready to give up on all media. I wrote a letter to Rachel Maddow explaining how disappointing her comments about the President were. Chris Matthews seems to have a crush on Huntsman. Cenk Uygur is useless and an FDL plant.

Unfortunately, I logged on to Kos this morning and found an anti-Obama fest. It is very depressing.

Honestly, I have started to have nightmares about this election.

  91. Hey- I am 64 and a new grandmother. I can’t stand Gregory or any of those Sunday Republican love fests.

As a radical 60’s person, who found out how stupid it was to bash LBJ over one issue, I have learned a lesson. One issue purists will sometimes throw out the good. I think a lot of so-called progressives are stuck in their one issue purist cement.

  92. Could not agree more. Dumb hosts, corporate media and lying guests. I would rate them just above Jerry Springer.

  93. http://democratsforprogress.com/forum/showthread.php?tid=6799

Great article from LA Times on our president’s growing confidence in his role, following his instincts (Bin Laden, Afghanistant) and insistence of getting outside the bubble. One more reason why he needs 4 more years: just getting started, getting better, more experience, with values that we need in that office. His opponents all are negative and will leave most of us out.

  94. Lorraine,

“There are a number of homosexuals who are plain and simple racist.”

Here’s the thing – unfortunately, that’s just part of life. I have met homosexuals who are bigots, I’ve met African-Americans who are homophobic. I’ve met caucasians who are bigots, and I’ve met caucasians who are homophobic. But, I’ve had the good pleasure and honor to know many more in all groups who see each other as a part of humanity, as a whole.

What spiritual war are you speaking of? Equal marriage rights?

  95. Of course, you know Gov Gollum don’t care about the Everglades!

That’s why WE gotta find some way to GET ‘IM OUT…Citizen lobby, legislative ballot referendums, et al?!😉 lol
