Dubya-Free, Media-Free, Stupidity-Free Mother’s Day Open Thread

Some of you asked to have a thread free of BS today, especially with all those torture cheerleaders spamming Sunday’s shows. So, here’s an open thread limited only to goodwill.

Happy Mother’s Day, everyone.

  1. OMG!!!!! I’m first? Shut up, that never happens 😀

Happy Mothers Day everyone! Have a blessed and wonderful day!

  2. I’ll start it out with saying Happy Mom’s Day to all moms. I just talked to my 94yr. old mom who is many miles away in Florida. We once again shared a laugh at our annual mom’s day funny. When my daughter was little, she told my mom, her grandmother, that she couldn’t tell her what was in the mom’s day gift that she was about to open but she could give her a little hint. She said, “It rhymes with fecklace”. hahaha—one of those family stories which is enjoyed forever. That daughter still cannot keep a secret. As a joke, she told me a couple days ago that she couldn’t tell me what I was getting but it rhymed with “plowers”.

  3. WONDERFUL! I was just thinking that I NEED to stay away from the news shows today!

I’d rather talk about something more positive and fun 😀

I was actually re-watching the Nat Geo documentary on the Presidential photographer, and thinking, wow they should do a follow-up, given that iconic photo that was taken this past week. That is definitely one for the history books!

  4. Thank you BWD, for everything — Have a very happy Mother’s Day to you, and everyone here.

    Have a good one!!!

  5. bwd, would you at all consider creating a personal fundraising page on OFA and directing contributions through it? It would create a money-bomb, which is a really fun and motivating graphic.

    It’s easy: http://my.barackobama.com/page/content/howtofundraise/

I know that I keep nagging and harping on this but it’s just in the spirit of Mother’s Day so I’m forgiven. 😉

  6. May your Angels look down and see the glory and grace you offer Mr. President.
Happy Mother’s Day to Everyone !
I hope today in all things each can Feel the Love of in our Nation! Especially the First Family ~ Feel the Love we have for you !
God Bless YOU All today and Enjoy one Another in Peace and Harmony!

  7. Good Morning, and Happy MOTHER’S DAY, TO ALL the wonderful, beautiful, loving MOTHERS! 🙂

  8. Good morning, everyone and Happy Mother’s Day. Hope you all have a beautiful day full of family and love and delicious treats!

A very special shout out to FLOTUS and the First Family. We love you!

  9. Happy Mother’s Day to all the Moms out there… and many thanks again to BWD for this great, positive blog.

  10. I saw the President at the Allison Transmission company in Indy on Friday. It was the first time I saw him in person since the campaign in 2008. As he spoke to the audience with his planned remarks I just kept sending all the love and support of spirit that I could his way. He seemed so thin to me. After the event a group of OFA volunteers had lunch together, all women, and none of us acquainted much before that. It was so enjoyable to spend time with such positive people who were so supportive of our President. None of them knew about this site but they all left with the info. Hope they find themselves on here soon.

  11. Thank you Cuphalffull,

Glad to hear you were able to see our wonderful president and what a nice way to end a week.

Happy Mothers day to all and a special Mothers Day prayer and thank you to our blog host, Blackwaterdog, Mrs. Obama, Mrs. Robinson, all the mothers of the Obama administration, and of our service men/women.

  12. Oh my goodness!!! BWD you are in the NYT Sunday magazine in the letters section!

I was sitting down this morning reading the NYT and lo and behold they have a twitter post of yours in response to the story on PBO’s mom.

BWD’s quote: “nothing has changed: the bigots still throw rocks at the black kid , and he’s still dancing”

  13. Congratulations, cuphalfful, it is an amazing experience to see him in person. How many people were there? When the President was here during the campaign, I also thought he was so thin. I just think he has a high metabolism that he can keep running. I have a brother like that. He can eat anything he wants and never gains a pound. It is very frustrating as a sister who has to look after her weight.

  14. Good morning one and all and HAPPY MOTHER’S DAY!
Jackie 4 Obama – at your earlier suggestion, I did go to the gratefulness site and I have a candle there. Thanks so much for sharing this information! Have a wonderful day everyone and don’t forget to laugh today.

  15. Happy Mothers Day to all the mommies and future mommies, such as myself. 😀 The early morning service I attended today was wonderful. All the Moms in attendance received flowers and lots of hugs. I am energized (just like our amazing energy bunny POTUS OBAMA)and look forward to a new week.

God bless our President, the administration, our first family, our local leaders including out church leaders and our nation.

  16. Wow thanks for the info. I love tall skinny men, especially when they have big brains and are gutsy beyond belief. No wonder Prez Obama is compared to Abe Lincoln so much.

  17. My brain has been automatically filtering out the stupidity lately. So, thank you GC’s brain, thank you and Happy Mother’s Day to all, and a special one to a certain Ms Ann for giving us the greatest gift.

  18. The ‘PBHO Effect’, “A Change You Can Believe In” :

Be The Change, Inc: You must be the change, you wish to see in the world…

While the 2008 presidential election was groundbreaking in many ways, one of the biggest changes was the level of engagement among many youth across the country. Millenials were ready to make their voices heard and create change. Now, President Obama and his administration want to make sure young people continue to have a say in politics, on issues as broad as the environment to education to foreign policy. That’s why he announced last month [Mar 2011] that he and his administration are making a commitment to participate in 100 youth roundtables, in a campaign called 100 Youth Strategies for Winning the Future….

    http://www.bethechangeinc.org/ (It’s on Twitter, too…BetheChangeInc!)

This needs be SPREAD Far & Wide…PASS IT ON!

And, oh yeah, although I’m not a mother, I wish all the wonderful, hardworkin’ females/males in the world, who are… A HAPPY MOTHER’S DAY! 🙂

    YES.WE.CAN…DO.More, Together! (h/t Bobfr) 😉
    YES.WE.CAN, Again Make History…Obama/Biden 2012!

  19. That is way cool. We know how great you are BWD, now the world is learning. Thank you for this site and all you do for us and our President.

  20. (((((((bwd))))))

The little blog that could. Never think that you’re not making a difference bwd even in the bad times, and please use this to take you through the tough times (and more are coming, guaranteed). But just as you said, inch by inch, mismash by mismash, you will make it cool to celebrate the gift which we have in the WH.

Yes we can, do more, together (h/t bob).

  21. Happy Mothers Day, All! And a Happy Mother’s Day to the First Lady Michelle Obama.

  22. I’d vote for ya. Happy Mom’s Day everyone! Thanks for this thread and the awesome MishMash. Sunday treat.

  23. Congrats, BWD…

After all, it’s a small world…”You’re on to bigger things!” 🙂

  24. That is moving! How great is that? I don’t know enough about Twitter to know the answer to this — does this mean the NYT is one of your followers? That’s interesting!

You’re in good company, too. lol @ Chait’s letter.

  25. Happy mother’s day, all moms and future moms! I love being a mother. Loved it from the beginning, thru all those peanut butter and jelly sandwiches and string cheese days, all the way on up. Even loved it during adolescence, though there were a few other emotions involved then :). And love my cool, sweet, 24 year old dude. It’s a great adventure!

  26. Good morning and Happy Mother’s Day to everyone, to BWD, and to our First Lady & Mom, Michelle Obama!

  27. Cuphalfful,

I got to see President Obama in person during the midterms. We waited over five hours in the freezing cold to see him. The build up to his appearance was so exciting. When he finally walked on the stage, I cried like a baby. I couldn’t believe I was seeing him with my own eyes. I don’t know how I could possibly love him any more than I do. I am interested in everything he does. He is my rock and my flame.

  28. On this fine Mother’s Day some pictures of our First Mom, Grandma and First Daughters wouldn’t be amiss.

  29. Back to you, Amiga! My mother is coming home Tuesday. Wish us luck with phase 2. BTW, my cat insists that MD really calls for all mothers to give gifts to their cats.

  30. Is today a good day to ask for help from folks on an article I’m writing? I’m going through the 2008 Democratic Platform adopted at the National Convention and showing how this Administration has been actively following it almost to the letter. Once before here there was a really great discussion on how this Administration had performed well in dealing with poverty in this country. Could folks provide me with a couple good bullet points to add?

I’m also struggling with “Real leadership for Rural America.”

  31. How befitting it would be, if those artistically capable, like Will.i.am would write a song using the Issac Hayes theme song; Shaft.

    That would be just awesome.

On Friday, SMiller had her version. I must confess that I didn’t hear it though, but when I was discussing this with a family member, she told me that SMiller had something this Friday.

    Great job as always.

Happy Mothers Day to all you Moms.

  32. Happy Mother’s Day to All who mother (those with kids and those w/o their own who fill the role for others).

A special Mother’s Day wish for military moms, Michelle Obama, Mrs. Robinson, SOS Hillary R. Clinton, and other mothers in the adminstration, as well as the wives of other administraion memebers who give up so much of their spouses’ time in service to all of us.

Thanks BWD, for this space to show our appreciation.

  33. a Happy Mothers Day to your Mom g wish you all the best in phase II.

My plan for today is to sit in my throne, bark orders and offer unsolicited advice to anyone who will listen, in other words a day like any other day. ;), (my cat respects my efforts because he thinks I’m REALLY good at opening cans)

Happy Mothers Day to all the bwd moms too!

  34. Getting much love from my only kitty. She’s sitting in my lap purring up a storm while I type. The best gift in the world.

  35. Here is something from my notes – I think it came from Creolchild originally.

    1. A $20 billion increase for the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), formerly known as Food Stamps.

    2. A $1 billion in funding for the Community Services Block Grant (CSBG) that is intended to revitalize low-income communities via “Job training and placement assistance”, “Financial literacy programs”, et al, to helping families become self-sufficient.

    3. A $2 billion in new Neighborhood Stabilization Funds that will allow ailing neighborhoods be kept maintained.

    4. A $1.5 billion in Homelessness Prevention Funds to keep people in their homes and prevent homelessness.

    5. A $5 billion increase for the Weatherization Assistance Program to help low income families save on their residential energy expenditures by making their homes more energy efficient.

    6. A $4 Billion program, The Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act of 2010, “authorizes funding for federal school meal and child nutrition programs and increases access to healthy food for low-income children.”

    7. As part of the HCR bill, subsidies will be available to the uninsured and families with income between the 133 percent and 400 percent of poverty level($14,404 for individuals and $29,326 for a family of four).

    8. Estabilished Open Doors to end the 640,000 men, women and children who are homeless in America by 2020.

    9. Increased the amount of federal Pell Grant awards so that funds are available to those with less access to have opportunity.

    10. Provided $510 Million for the rehabilitation of Native American housing.

    11. Expanded eligibility for Medicaid to all individuals under age 65 with incomes up to 133 percent of the federal poverty level ($14,400 per year for an individual).

    12. Providing assistance to low-income workers through the Earned Income Tax Credit giving millions of working families the break they need.

    13. Education being the way out of Poverty, kicked off the “Race to the Top”, a $4.3 billion program, that rewards via grants to States that meet a few key benchmarks for reform, and states that outperform the rest.

  36. Thank you, Linda!!! I’m one of your biggest fans. I was just trolling your site for stuff I could use and am so inspired by all the cool stimulus vids on your site. We are so lucky to have you.

  37. I will also try to include 1 stimulus story per day. This truly was a wonderful program that didn’t get the credit it deserved. Here is one example.

Stimulus: Chicago Will Pay Cab Companies to Go Green

includes a video of the President talking about jobs building hybrid vehicles, giving folks a tax credit for those vehicles and closing tax loopholes for oil companies.

  38. Congrats BWD! This shows that people are noticing your blog. You have made the big time.

  39. Finally a video clip form his Miami Dade commencement exercise.

Thanks in advance to everyone who visits the blog to read these stories, shares these links on Facebook or Twitter, and works to carry the message forward.

  40. Congrats BWD,

I hope it brings more here to your site. I tell everyone I meet about this place.

  41. Just doing the things all the rest of us always knew you would do:)Congradulations to you for this. Well deserved.

  42. Happy Mother’s Day beautiful Ladies!

There is no love, like a mother’s love,
    no stronger bond on earth…
like the precious bond that comes from God,
to a mother, when she gives birth.
A mother’s love is forever strong,
    never changing for all time…
and when her children need her most,
    a mother’s love will shine.
    God bless these special mothers,
    God bless them every one…
for all the tears and heartache,
and for the special work they’ve done.
When her days on earth are over,
    a mother’s love lives on…
    through many generations,
with God’s blessings on each one.
    Be thankful for our mothers,
for they love with a higher love…
from the power God has given,
and the strength from up above.

  43. And a tip of the hat to one Stanley Ann Durham, single mom, who did a pretty good job with her kid.

  44. Happy Mother’s Day everyone:) What a wonderful journey mothering has been. Hardest job on the planet, yet the one I wouldn’t trade for anything.Missing my Mom today, like everyday. She passed away in 1998. Sometimes it seems like yesterday, sometimes forever ago.I still “talk” to her everyday…seems I always need her advice, no matter how old I get.I just know that I wasn’t done talking to her yet. She was my everything. Her voice rings in my head, and I go forward everyday doing the things that would make her proud of me.Love you, Mom.Love you bunches.300,65 hundred million.
A special Happy MD to PBO’s mom. Without her,and her passion to raise her son right…well, just thank you Stanley Dunham. You would be so proud!

  45. And HAPPY MOTHER’S DAY to the lovely lady who gave birth to our President and did much to make him the man he is. She must be so very proud of her son.

  46. I can’t get enough of The Reid Report. Joy has a lovely post today that begins like this:

In memory of my mom, and in honor of all the mothers, grandmothers, great-grands and godmothers out there, have a happy, wonderful Mother’s Day! A book recommend after the jump.

The recommended book is “A Singular Woman” by Janny Scott about another amazing mother, Stanley Ann Dunham. I can’t wait to read this book. It makes me weep that she was not able to see Barack become president. He is a gift to us and the world. The cover of the book has my favorite photo of Barack and his mother. He is a little rascal sitting on a fence and she is standing behind him with her arms holding him securely. They look so sweet together.

By the way, while we are talking about mothers, Barack’s sister Maya Soetoro-Ng has a new book out called “Ladder to the Moon” which is in honor of her mother. I have the book and it is absolutely gorgeous.

  47. Happy Mother’s Day to Stanley Ann Dunham for giving America the greatest gift of all.

  48. Speaking of closing the Oil Industry tax subsidies, My thoughts are that the current barrage of ads against PBO asking people to object to him imposing a tax increase on themselves and relating the high gas prices must be by the Oil Industries. It lists National Taxpayers Association or some such name on the ad. Anyone know anything about it? Seems like an ad by our side countering with the truth would be appropriate.

Just wanted to say Happy Mothers Day to all today before going to spend the day with my own Mom and hopefully getting phone calls from my four adult kids.

Thanks, BWD, for this troll free meeting place of kindred spirits and PBO supporters. I know since coming here I am much less inclined to feel depressed upon reading a political blog. I can get the news without the whine and lies. I am afraid I do not see many over on the OFA blog as before and their new blog does not have the versatility the old one did. I hope that does not affect the success in organizing for the re-election.

  49. bwd, would you at all consider creating a personal fundraising page on OFA and directing contributions through it?

A second question from those aliens at foreign shores would be:

Could you offer us a possibility to channel some money to you ?

I’m quite sure you would spend it wisely (e.g., on this web site, or the research to keep it up-to-date), and it wouldn’t stir up questions of us, foreign nationals, underwriting election campaigns in the US of A.

  50. Our Mother’s Day “gift” …the President is on 60 Minutes tonight. Set the DVR if you can’t watch.Only interview given.

  51. Happy Mothers Day All !!

I am eagerly looking forward to 60 minutes tonight.

I wrote a diary about Mothers Day for Military Moms over at the Orange blog. LOL!

I spend very little time there except to visit groups of interest that are about supporting the President or the Military Family Groups to spread the word about Michelle Obama and Jill Biden;s JoiningForces.org.

  52. BWD congrats if you would like to run for President we are in HE, HE, HE,

  53. “…I am afraid I do not see many over on the OFA blog as before and their new blog does not have the versatility the old one did. I hope that does not affect the success in organizing for the re-election.”

    Obama Grandmama,

Everything will be alright. ::Virtual Hugs::

As it gets closer to 2012 Presidential Election, there’ll be more Obamacrat involvement, activities, and interactions. And, as time goes on, the majority, if not, all the site’s kinks and bugs will be resolved… it maybe better than the old one… You think?

HOW TO USE THE NEW BARACKOBAMA.COM… http://www.barackobama.com/news/how-to-use-the-new-barackobamacom

    WHAT DO YOU THINK?… http://www.barackobama.com/news/what-do-you-think

    THE NEW RESOURCE CENTER… http://www.barackobama.com/news/the-new-resource-center

    THANK YOU… http://www.barackobama.com/news/thank-you

By the way, have you “voiced” your concerns about the site’s non-versatility and trolls?

You know, the old sayin’, “Practice makes perfect!”

    Keep the faith…HAPPY MOTHER’S DAY 2 U! 🙂

    YES.WE.CAN…DO.More, Together! (h/t Bobfr) 😉
    YES.WE.CAN, Again Make History…Obama/Biden 2012!

  54. thanks SG that was really touching, my mother has been gone for over ten years and it’s true that her love lives on.

  55. My mother was a very Catholic Latina who took her religious faith seriously. My father was an agnostic Marxist who despised all religions. This clash of philosophies made for some lively discussions between my parents but they loved each very much despite their differences.

Mama had a large plastic statue of Jesus that live in a nicho in our kitchen. Jesus was a family icon that she treasured because the statue had been blessed by someone she considered important. Mama prayed to Jesus often for the salvation of her unruly brood of children and her recalcitrant husband.

One day my parents had an argument that sent my Mama stomping away into the kitchen. Papi heaved a huge sigh and muttered: “Now, she’s going to kiss her plastic Jesus and pray for my soul.”

We children thought that was the funniest thing and would tell each other to “Go kiss plastic Jesus” when ever we were really annoyed with each other.

When Mama died there was some lively discussion among us children about just who should inherit the statue. Like good Democrats, we compromised and take turns being the keeper of plastic Jesus. It’s been my turn this year. On Mothers Day we trade off and my brother was at my house 8:00 this morning to take Jesus home with him. This is a small piece of our wonderful Mother that is very dear to all of us.

    I love you Mamita.

Happy Mother’s Day to all and thank you BWD for giving all of us this thread today.

  56. Happy Mothers Day AG, Feliz Dia de la Madre, enjoy your day and your family!

  57. What a beautiful, beautiful story. I’ve always wondered why you say “kiss my plastic jesus” when especially peeved by something which the right wing or professional left have said/done.

Sounds like the deep contrast/contradictions between your parents produced some interesting, tolerant and wonderful offspring.

    Happy Mothers Day (((((((((Aquagranny))))))))).

  58. She was incredibly proud of him since childhood, boasting to friends, “my son is so bright, he can do anything he ever wants in the world, even be president of the United States.”

  59. I’m enjoying the best Mother’s Day ever – since I live in Florida and my son and his family live in Mass. and I can’t spend the day with them, my husband always says I am not his mother and so it is up to our son to celebrate me, I am taking it upon myself to celebrate my own damn self by spending the day re-reading “The Bridge”! I never tire of reading about, reading this blog about, or hearing good comments about Barack Obama! This book, more than any other that I have read about our amazing President is such a rich and glorious read that I am enjoying it so much on this day especially. It is interesting – so many have said that because his father was absent from his life, because his mother spent so much of his life living abroad, that he desired settling in one place and having a family. Yet, if you really examine it, he has also spent a lot of time traveling around the world – much of it away from his family. And, what I find especially wonderful about that is that not only did he turn out so beautifully, his children seem to be extraordinary little beings in their own right. I think it is a tribute to the power of love and great parenting – both his mother and he and Michelle place great emphasis on education, personal responsibility and not spoiling their children. I watched an interview with Michelle this past week and I was impressed that her children are learning how to iron and that they still have chores to do.

  60. That is a wonderful story. Thank you for sharing that. I will be chuckling about this for the rest of the day. Happy Mother’s Day to you and all the other mothers here. 🙂

  61. You have created a great site remarkable for the lack of internet insolence and disrespect. Your theme of TOAITR is being picked up more and more. Joe Klein’s piece in this week’s Time on Bin Laden ends with the statement “He (PBO) will play the grownup because he is a grownup. It will be interesting to see if that works.” Thanks for all you do.

  62. Thanks for sending positive vibes O’s way, cuphalffull. I noticed his visit there got a decent write-up in the Indy Star also. (in between all the “is Mitch running?” stories)

  63. How exciting…you know POTUS..reads that paper too….how lovely..if he stumbles to your comment….Wow

Slowly but surely, I have no doubt that one day you will get a hug from our President…

    Much Love:-)

    Happy Mother’s day everyone

  64. In the last months of her life, she battled the Cigna insurance company, which refused to pay her bills on the grounds her cancer was a “pre-existing condition”. Dunham was turning the case over to “my son and attorney, Barack Obama,” she finally wrote to Cigna.

Wow was she proud of him. His mom sounds like quite the character. I only disagree with one thing said in that article (well, two, I think that POTUS needs to get over his guilt at not being at his mom’s deathbed), but I also think that Michelle Obama is very beautiful as well as attractive. Her look is very unusual and her emotions seem to display on her face. I find her gorgeous, but that’s my personal aesthetic.

  65. I’m so glad that you’re treating yourself to a lovely holiday, Jayne.

  66. You guys, please forgive the promotion, but this week’s edition of progressweekly is here: http://theprogressweekly.wordpress.com/

It’s intended to be a light resource for people who don’t spend a lot of time reading the news but might be willing to briefly read through a POTUS-centric couple of minutes every week. I hope to eventually have more people provide features so that it’s more of a group blog. But I just wanted to make sure that everyone who is interested in this project is aware that there’s a new edition. There’s going to be one or two more links tomorrow, and then after that, no more promotion for this week.

  67. This is what PBO posted on Facebook today:

Mothers are the rocks of our families and a foundation in our communities. In gratitude for their generous love, patient counsel, and lifelong support, let us pay respect to the women who carry out the hard work of motherhood with skill and grace, and let us remember those mothers who, though no longer with us, inspire us still.

  68. I’m not missing any of the Sunday news shows cause I stopped watching them back in 2003. Can’t miss nothing you have never watched. I feel sorry for the rest of America if they are tuning in to that DIATRIBE. Thank God for sites like this one. HAPPY MOTHER’S DAY to all the mothers. Obama/Biden 2012!!

  69. She planted that seed, that belief, that he could do great things. I loved that he said that his mother’s greatest gift to him was “a sense of unconditional love that was big enough that, with all the surface disturbances of our lives, it sustained me entirely.” What a testament to his mother. That indeed is the greatest gift a mother can give.

  70. What a lovely sentiment on Mother’s Day. President Obama has a way with words. When I am at a loss for words that describe this remarkable man, I like to resort to my favorite proclamation: “He’s just good inside”.

  71. I also think the trolls have made a lot of people get turned off to that blog and the mediators letting them troll the site is disgraceful imo. I have written, contacted by phone and still they never wrote back or gave me a verbal explanation. I have not gone back on either blogs again. POTUS gets my biweekly donations tho.

  72. Awww thanks for sharing that sweet story. I am here waiting for my Mom. We are going to the movies later, your story makes me want to hug her really hard when she gets here. 😀

  73. Okay that was amazing. Totally answers for me why the media keeps acting like he got lucky, or had ‘new found’ empathy (Tucson), or any other idiotic way they try to frame his actions. Very enlightening indeed.

  74. In addition to thinking about the amazing women in President Obama;s life (Stanley Ann Dunham, FLOTUS, Marian Robinson, Maya Soetoro-Ng, Sasha and Malia, I am also thinking about his maternal grandmother aka “Toot”.

    Madelyn Lee Payne Dunham

Barack Obama’s maternal grandmother was born in 1922 and died on November 2, 2008.[32] She was a bank vice president in Hawaii. Obama said that when he was a child, his grandmother “read me the opening lines of the Declaration of Independence and told me about the men and women who marched for equality because they believed those words put to paper two centuries ago should mean something.

  75. zizi, that was nothing short of excellent. And it is so true. Everytime the president accomplishes something, the media acts as though it’s completely new and out of character. Thank goodness that we have the video technology, where we can show that since 2007, then Senator Obama outlined his strategy for getting Bin Laden (while being ridiculed by Republicans, Democratic rivals, and FOX News pundits alike). And he has followed through with that plan, not because the PL “pressured” him into doing anything, but because he is a long strategic thinker and planner.

  76. Happy Mother’s Day to all here at BPI. I hope you have a great day.

  77. This is a note about the Maureen Dowd NYT column posted on the previous thread, but it’s all about goodwill, so hope you won’t mind.

For a long time, I’ve thought Maureen Dowd has hidden and misused her incredible talents as a writer and someone with a knack for analyzing all things at their silliest levels, thus making everybody take another look at their ego-driven selves through the charm of her words. I used to love her … and, today, I love her wit and writing again. Great column, Ms. Dowd!

  78. Also – if it hasn’t been posted – Mrs. Obama and Mrs. Biden are on the Martha Stewart show on the Hallmark channel tonight.

  79. Just to keep things in perspective about who watches what and who got to appear before the American public today:

Oct 2010 Meet The Press remained the top Sunday morning public affairs show last week, as usual.

But it was the lowest total viewer average for the NBC program since July 5, 1992. And the rest of the Sunday shows are coming close to its number one spot.

NBC average 2,420,000 total viewers, followed by CBS’ Face The Nation at #2 with 2,280,000, ABC’s This Week with 1,950,000. and FOX News Sunday with 980,000.

In the A25-54 demographic, NBC had 770,000, ABC was #2 with 620,000, CBS had 610,000 and FOX 380,000

David Gregory’s Meet The Press has remained largely the top Sunday show as it has been for years. But there have been periodic victories by other programs who took the lead certain weeks. If 18-year lows continue, it could open the door for another show, whether ABC or CBS, to take the lead.

The vast majority of these viewers (of about 7 million total for all four shows) are over 55. Since Dick Gregory took over Meet the Press, its ratings have plummeted from 7 million viewers to 2.4 million.
60 Minutes, on a bad day, gets over 10 million, again mostly over 50 crowd. But when the President appears…their ratings improve dramatically. Whatever people may have bothered to hear this morning will more than amply be countered tonight.

  80. Why not? I would be right there to vote for you; of course after BO finishes his second term. Otherwise I would be greatly conflicted trying to choose between you and him.

Any way, Happy Mothers’ Day to you and to everyone your wonderful community. I am absolutely convinced that as people discover your wonderful site they would be hooked as I have been. Many decent people who are not driven by the hatred of the President are continually bombarded with false information. Pretty soon their support for the President begins to waver.

  81. BWD make sure you get pictures so I can post them to FaceBook. My friends love your work of love.

People who question the mission to get Bin Laden SHOULD HAVE THEIR HEADS EXAMINED!
    …..Y E S S S S S…..!

  83. AG – Sounds like something my own Mother would have said and done! Thanks for sharing that perfect Mother’s Day story with us.

  84. What a wonderful story of love and family unity! Happy Mothers’ Day Aquagranny.

  85. Hey Betsey, love your name :); I have an almost 24 year old dude as well. He’ll be 24 in Sept. Happy Mother’s Day.

  86. Nice that Pres. Obama FINALLY gets to do an interview where he isn’t defending something that the media or the Republicans have screwed up or lied about. Great interview and the president was candid and thoughtful as always.

  87. Betsey – I feel similarly about my own son, who’s now in his 40s, father of five and Grampa of one! We just spent Mother’s Day together, with the extended family.

One of my favorite recollections of his childhood is the incredibly funny things he said or did, whether he was intending to be funny or not.

When he was five, he walked out of the bathroom one day, with a very uncomfortable look on his face. I said, “What’s the matter, honey? Don’t you feel good?” He answered, “I think I have Dinah Maria.”

When he was seven, I had him sitting down at the dining room table with me, so I could calmly chastise him about something he had done or not done … I tried to be loving but firm … and this was at a time when I guess he really didn’t know he could talk back to me. I think maybe I went too far with the yada yada yada (in his mind), because his little cute face got all red and a vein popped on his neck, and he said, “Somebody in this neighborhood just better shut up!” (He was a big fan of Mr. Roger’s Neighborhood at the time, which stressed being nice to people, so no doubt he felt he could draw on that show for his response to me … and get away with it.)

And when he was 14, I remember telling my friends the next day that my son, who by that time was taller than I was, “had me up against the doorframe, angrily saying something to me.” After my friends’ eyeballs would pop out wondering what I would say he did next, I added, “He was yelling at me, ‘What do you MEAN you don’t understand algebra?'”

Great kid, and it’s been great being his mother.

  88. Happy Mother’s Day to all single mothers out there, single fathers, partners and more; I have one child (she is perfect, that is why me had no more children) and two dogs, married to “That one” in my bed for many years and HOPE to keep it that way for years to come.
    ¡Feliz día de la madre!

    Obama/Biden 2012!

  89. When he became president,he “took the case up” for ALL Americans. They can not do that to anyone’s mother, father, sister, brother or child any more. Thank you Mr. President.

  90. Wouldn’t it be great if Oprah had some-one dynamic and progressive doing a Sunday show?It would augur well for her OWN channel.
Sorry to say the Sunday shows are a bunch of backward thinking folksies who rarely display any enlightened perspective!

  91. Zizi, thank you so much for “pimping” your wonderful post. It should be a must read for every one who is interested in truth.

As I said in my comment at WEE SEE YOU, it is by far the best commentary I’ve read that pushes back against the ridiculous, manufactured, meme of the “new Obama,” promoted by the MSM and some of the so called leftists bashers of the President, regarding his courageous action that took out OBL.

It seems to me that the only people who are trying to sell us this narrative of the “new Obama” are the same people who were not paying attention to the “old” Obama, or, were lazily repeating the lies, from both the right and the left, about the the President.

Really wonderful read, Zizi, as are all your posts.

  92. What a beautiful tribute to your mom. I must say it made me cry. How wonderful. Thanks for sharing.

  93. Yup. Amazing cool. No chest thumping. Giving credit to all, including shrub. And finally calling out the holier-than-Gandhi types like mm, gg and other such left wing nutz.

And thanks to the interviewer steve kroft for not acting as the usual teevee jerk.

  94. Thanks for those links.Wonderful compliments from those moderates/independents.Nice of them to finally see what we have always known. Better late than never.

  95. While there has been some public discussion of the extensive archives captured when bin Laden died, I don’t think most people grasp how important they could become.

In short, President Obama may be well on his way to flipping virtually the entire surviving al Qaeda network into de facto informants for the U.S., in the context of a self-democratizing Middle East which is a much harder environment for them in any event.

In effect, the virus of al Qaeda may shortly become its own vaccine.

    I explain here:

  96. Adding my congratulations to the bunch! Great comment you got published. I really enjoyed the article about his mom and thought the story of his ability to ignore the bullies was amazing and it has been replaying in my mind all week! ^_^

  97. Maybe one of the reasons for the confusion is that nobody really knows how to react when a special forces team raid the bad guy’s headquarters, kill him, and take away all the information about his global terror network.

Because that only happens in movies and video games, not in real life. Until now 🙂

  98. Thanks Dry Observer. I stole that interesting link for my gos diary comment. 🙂

  99. I agree…

Old/new site problems need to be addressed like yesterday. If not, it ain’t a good thing!

    But, don’t give up…

Remember what PBHO (as just BHO) once said, “WE don’t quit, I don’t quit!” 😉

Are you on Twitter? If so, a couple of the original OFA “managerial” team is on it…like @jeremybird, @mitch_stewart (just got on), et al.

By the way, this is the new site designers: @nataliefoster: Great team! RT @dr_pugh: Huge shoutouts to @dtipson, Marakie Getachew, Chris Wolf, @zymara, and @rio517 for building… http://barackobama.com.

Once “on,” I’ll tweet ’em about the discouragin’, “inexcusable” situation.

    YES.WE.CAN…Do.More, Together! (h/t Bobfr) 😉
    YES.WE.CAN, Again Make History…Obama/Biden 2012!
