Yea, that was something else

Please make sure you’ll find a way to watch PBO’s speech in Miami. I hope to post it tomorrow. That was indeed something else.

  1. He was great as usual. If you want to be impressed, Google “The Curviture of Constitutional Space” by Larry Tribe and Barack Obama. Not bad for an affirmaitve action student that because he’s black could not possibly be smart. Bob Shrum mentioned it on Hardball. It was written when he was the editor of the Harvard Law review.

  2. That was WOW!!!! That speech was incredible. So personal.

I am absolutely in love with this man and I’m not making any apologies.

  3. Excellent speech.

On another note, you may recall that President Obama was the keynote speaker at the University of Michigan Ann Arbor last year. Well, this year it’s none other than MI governor Rick Synder (R)- a guy who vows to make at least 15% cut in higher education and is now on the “recall” watch for being kicked out of office.

Really U of M? what kind of message are you sending to your graduates? Or is it that no one of any substance wanted to speak the year after President Obama did? I almost feel bad for this years’ graduates even though it really should be a great celebratory time for them!

  4. I Think we all need a little laugh after the tough emotional week we’ve all had. So here is a little Present from a lurker and a prelude to saturday 🙂

  5. Can’t wait to hear the speech when it’s available next.

I respect and admire the President so much! Thanks for the photos. [Excuse me, but is the President looking even trimmer? I know he’s taking good care of himself, but does he never gain a pound?]

  6. I’m a grad of Michigan. I heard the students were planning some type of protest. I will be watching.
As for Obama’s speech.boy did he get very personal regarding his father. he really tried to connect with the students telling that story. as you know the birthers are all over new stories regarding Obama,Sr at Harvard.

  7. With the kind of schedule that he has, I can understand why it might be difficult for him to gain any weight. Also that may just be his body type. I notice that both his daughters have a similar body type as him – that is, chubby pre-puberty, and then tall and slender during and after puberty.

  8. Nothing subtle or nuanced about that speech. He is so totally on the social contract that defines America and humanity and it is clear he is going to be ever more fierce in his support of immigration reform, preservation and strengthening of health care, education for every American throughout their life, and investments in advancing the technologies and infrastructure upon which sustainable jobs and an economy can thrive.

Those gathered certainly seemed to express the fact that they are part of something special, they know well the hate-driven racism being directed at their President and them, and they are going to be not just voters but advocates for the re-election of the President.

  9. As if I needed another reason to love my President…he’s not afraid of people. Period. There is no race, creed, color, economic status or preference that gives him pause for even a moment. We are all people and that makes us worthy of his attention. Doesn’t get any better than that.

  10. Oh, I am so sorry I missed it. We all need a little healing due to the completely downer of the past few days.

It looks like BWD will get it up tomorrow. I love to see the man smile and I love to see people smile at him.

  11. OMG! that is going to be a hoot. I hope they drown that idiot out. Did he invite himself?

  12. Standard protocol at UofM to invite the newly elected governor. Been doing it almost forever.

  14. He is very, very thin but he is also very healthy. He seems to be able to balance everything in his life, miraculously.

  15. Wow, that is just SICK. I’m so glad you responded. I’m going to have to add my voice against their disgusting support of this ugly mess.

  16. Yeah I heard the right wing’s new target is Barack Obama Sr. and how nefarious he was and the fact that Stanley Ann Dunham and Barack Obama Sr. had an interracial marriage at a time when it wa illegal in part of America is bad.

So I guess the Right Wing has decided to just go full blown racist for 2012. With all of this racism they are getting close to calling President Obama the N word in public.

  17. I just read on another blog…that they are planning a huge rally protest //and that the graduating students will have a moment of silence with their back turned down while Gov. Snyder speaks….

That would be a site to see:-)

    Good for them

  18. US court backs stem cell funding.

A US appeals court has overturned an earlier order to suspend federal funding of stem cell research.

The Washington court said opponents of the research, who say it is illegal because it involves the destruction of human embryos, were unlikely to succeed in their lawsuit to stop the funding.

The ruling marks a significant victory for US President Barack Obama, correspondents say.

President Obama lifted a ban on funding for stem cell research in March 2009.

Soon after, US District Judge Royce Lamberth issued a temporary injunction on the move while a legal challenge went ahead – although this suspension was itself overruled on appeal, pending a final decision.

The US Court of Appeals in Washington ruled 2-1 on Friday that a 1996 US law against federal funding of embryo destruction was “ambiguous”, and “did not prohibit funding a research project in which an ESC (embryonic stem cell) will be used”.

  21. Conservatives mad that Superman to renounce AMerican Citizenship -

I don’t know what they problem is – I know he doesn’t have a long form birth certificate. Hell, he’s an illegal immigrant.

  22. okay wasn’t aware of this. NOW it makes sense. Otherwise I was very puzzled as to why U of M would do such a thing!

  23. I think that’s exactly the reason why he mentionned his father.

Sadly, we have to prepare ourselves. The haters will smear his entire african family. His mother too probably. This is just beginning.

    May their hate destroy them.

  24. I can’t agree with this. Protest before and after but don’t disrupt the speech or the celebration, boycott it if you feel so strongly.

I woudn’t like it if somebody protested President Obama in the same way.

  25. Today Michigan judges approved recall language, and so the recall can proceed. They have 90 days to procure 800,000 signatures.

    Fingers crossed.

  26. I’m with you, I wouldn’t want President Obama to deal with that type of protest either. They should protest before/after or go vote and not get these nuts in office.

  27. makesense4tulips: Well, at least their public relations people mentioned they aren’t endorsing “personal” or “political” views. Earlier today, I got a response from Macy’s (they have a Trump collection) which only mentioned “political views.” I responded that I was shocked they “thought racism was a political view,” and, therefore, something they could ignore.

Your line about this sponsor’s “commitment to racism” was perfect. May have to borrow that one!

  28. Thanks for posting, Makesense4tulips. What you received seems to be the pat response of Macy’s per someone else’s post earlier today, and I’m sure we’ll find that other corporations are adapting the same language. What I love about your response is to say to them, fine, stay with the show, and you’ll suffer the consequences as well.

The other thing I think we’ll need to do is research who Dr. Pepper, Macy’s, et al (and/or their parent companies) are supporting with political contributions to obliterate their alleged — “we sponsor programs, not people. Our involvement in this or any other show we sponsor is in no way an endorsement of the personal or political beliefs and activities of any of the show’s talent.” Because when they give political contributions, aren’t they still “sponsoring” people?

I think the results of the Beck boycott scares them, and this pat response is the “light pushback” they’re hoping will satisfy consumers — they would be wrong.

  29. Great photo! How does the President fit all of these diverse events on his schedule on the same day? Amazing.

  30. OMG, jacquelineoboomer!!! 😉 You posted that you were the person who received the Macy’s response, just as I was making a reference to it in my post below ;-). Thanks for noting again. You’re response was great as well.

  31. Thanks! But I think I wasn’t the only one who received that Macy’s response – apparently they sent out a one-size-fits-all form letter, which more than one of us got.

Love how both companies mentioned here blamed the customer – kind of like, “Well, it’s not us – we’re only giving the customers what they want.” Stupid people with transparent answers.

Other than that, enjoy your night!

  32. Absolutely brilliant speech. You can tell he is hurting he knows the racial ugliness that has lined up against him. He is no fool. This is a major shot across the bow to wingnuts.

  33. thinkinoutthebox – This is old data and may not still be the case, but here’s what wiki said prior about Macy’s, which is very revealing (if accurate):

    Political contributions:
Federated Department Stores (Macy’s) gave $35,000 to federal candidates in the 2006 election through its political action committee – 9% to Democrats and 91% to Republicans.

  34. Sorry – that was from Source Watch not Wiki. Their websites look strikingly similar.

  35. Just held my nose and visited the Donald Trump page on Wiki (know your adversaries and all that). Found this listed for him:

    “Political party
    Registered Republican
    (c. 1987–1999; 2009–present)
    Democrat (2001-09)
    Reform Party (1999-2000)”

Gee, wonder which world event caused him to become a Republican (again) in 2009?

  36. Thanks so much, jacquelineoboomer. So, with a contribution landslide in favor of Republicans by 91%, they don’t sponsor political views…Righhhhhttt…

How dumb that they didn’t even bother to strike a 50/50 or let alone a 40/60 balance to give them some credibility on their “we don’t support political views” statement.

  37. I’ve spent part of this week “thinking too deeply” (as my son gently reminds me at times) of Donald Trump’s antics. So, I will try to get him out of my brain starting tomorrow (which, in my time zone, is about 5 mins. from now!).

But first, here are two stories about the #1 possible Republican contender for 2012, which pretty much sum up all the Rs have to offer:

As President Obama would say, “We got this,” (even though we can’t get complacent!).

  38. Well done tulips. I will be penning similar message to the same company to notify them that my family and my friends intend to boycott their products if they insist on supporting this racist, self indulgent man who claims to be a billionaire.

  39. Heh Jim. Nice to see you here. Loved your piece and thought it should get more look see. Keep up your good work. Saner voices need to be heard.

  40. I’ve sent my cut up Macys Platinum AMEX to the their CEO — here’s an excerpt of my letter that accompanied it:

You corporate oligarchs get in bed with each other and conspire to damage The President of the United States? Guess what, suckas? All you’ve done is irrevocably damaged the Macy’s brand for this forty-something white woman. Not only have you permanently lost my business, you’ve lost the business of every intelligent person I will persuade. Count on it.

I’ll leave you with a final question: just exactly who will buy your made-anywhere-but-the-USA crap after the Fascist Koch Brothers, the Ridiculous Has-Been Carnival Barker Trump, and the Republican Whores of Congress have completed the destruction of the once-great American middle class?

  41. No Problem 🙂

After some digging on Disney’s site, I found a feedback form at:

Here is my letter – haven’t heard back yet. will post when I do.

    Dear Sir or Madam:

I was just reading the Disney Human Rights Policy Statement, and was especially interested in this quote “Disney’s workplace policies and practices include commitments to non-discrimination and freedom from harassment.” I have no doubt that you uphold this standard when it comes to your employees. However, it is clear that you do not uphold this standard with respect to the television properties on which you place Disney advertising.

If you’ve been following the news this week, it should be readily apparent to you that you have become, however unwittingly, a key sponsor of a program that is hosted by Donald Trump, a man who has taken it upon himself to publicly and relentlessly harass a biracial American citizen and has, through his own words and actions, revealed himself to be a vile racist of the worst order.

My question is, when will you be pulling your advertising from his television program?

  42. This is a great help. Thank you. All these businesses are going to be seriously assessing the number of complaints. It doesn’t matter about the nicety of your wording, just get it across that you will boycott both the program and any sponsors and at the end of the day they’ll count the complaints–just like Congress does.

  43. Tribe is on record saying that Barack Obama was the most brilliant intern he’d ever had.

  44. Be prepared: Donald Trump has now found his campaign slogan — how because he hosts a TV show he fosters entrepreneurship and teamwork.

Expect it. And from some of the interviews I’ve seen with people on the street, they will fall for it. Like Schwarzenegger — how many times did we hear that people voted for him because he would ‘kick some butt?’ Forgetting that he goes to his trailer between scenes and is greased up for the cameras.

A segment of America has become terrifying. This IS seeping into regular consciousness. It IS affecting the minds of the low information voter.

Republicans can weather this sort of thing because they vote reliably and in sufficient numbers. The Left does not. God.

  45. File this under change we can believe in:

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — It has been the deadliest natural disaster on American soil since Hurricane Katrina. But the government response to the tornadoes that devastated the South last week has, at least in the first few days, drawn little of the searing criticism aimed at federal agencies back in 2005.

In numerous interviews in the low-income Alberta neighborhood here on Friday, shortly before President Obama and other officials toured what is now an unimaginable wasteland, residents said they had few complaints about the handling of the aftermath by state, local and federal agencies.

“It ain’t like Katrina,” said Darius Rutley, 21, whose house in Alberta was obliterated. “We’re getting help.”

Axavier Wilson, 20, who survived the storm in a closet as the rest of his house blew away, said he had been impressed that both Gov. Robert Bentley and Mr. Obama had visited rapidly. “I don’t think there’s much to mumble and grumble about,” he said. “Everybody feels secure about getting help.”

There was a single cry of “Help us” on Friday from a man who watched the president’s motorcade roll through a treeless lunar landscape, but hardly the wails of stunned desperation shouted from New Orleans rooftops.

  46. Posted before but since this is the subject I will post again one of my favorite parts of the speech and that which separates the Democrats from the GOP –

“So what I ask of you, graduates, as you walk out of here today is this:
Pursue success. Do not falter. *When you make it, pull somebody else up.*
(Applause.) Preserve our dream. *Remember your life is richer when people
around you have a shot at opportunity as well.* Strive to widen that circle
of possibility; strive to forge that big, generous, optimistic vision of
America that we inherited; strive to carry that dream forward to future

  47. If this isn’t the link go to for the speech

Obama tells grads in Miami: ‘Pursue success. Do not falter.’ | Florida politics blog: The Buzz | & St. Petersburg Times

  48. I see it didn’t link so go directly to the Tampa Bay paper – that is where I read the entire commencement speech – a great speech – as if any of you would be surprised about that!
