“He’s coming to Moneygall, he’s coming to my home town, I have to pinch myself”

Thanks, overseasgranny, for this awesome story and photos.

Stars and wipes: Villagers embark on mass spring clean for Obama’s visit to Irish ancestoral home

A small Irish village is pulling out all the stops and making sure it’s spotless in anticipation of one of its most famous sons.

Moneygall in County Offaly is getting a facelift, as the rural village prepares to welcome the most powerful man in the world, Barack Obama, next month.

The impending visit

// snip

Houses on the main street are being cleaned with power-hoses. Gardens are being tidied, new flowers are being planted.

Every house is being made to look its best, in preparation for the visit, which is likely to take place on Monday 23 May.
//

One of the villagers, Henry Healy, is the eighth cousin of Obama. He said: ‘At first it felt almost surreal but now it’s becoming very real. ‘He’s coming to Moneygall, he’s coming to my home town and I’m hopeful reality will really kick in if I’m privileged to meet the man and shake his hand. ‘You have to pinch yourself. I got a bit taken aback when I saw the CIA here two weeks ago. ‘I can only imagine what my reaction will be when the man himself actually lands here in the village.’

  1. You can take part too by grabbing a tshirt from whatsthecraicbarack.com made in Ireland especially for President Obama’s visit🙂 we ship worldwide

  2. Jeremy I was just reading about JFK and alot of his domestic policies and how pragmatic he was and there are a lot of similarities between Kennedy and Obama.

The funny thing is that though I admire JFK and I believe he was a great president history shows that JFK had a tough time trying to get programs like Medicare, Medicaid and other policies through congress.

Many of those policies didn’t come until after his death with LBJ and bigger Democratic majorities. And the policies he got through were far from perfect.

I don’t understand how the PL and the far left talks up JFK like he was some liberal saint when he was pragmatic and far from perfect. But then they talk trash about Obama and how he is not a real liberal though Obama has achieved more than any president in the past 40 years in just two years.

    repost

  3. FIRED UP…!!

    READY TO GO..!!!😀

  4. This is completely off-topic, but I’d like to remind everyone that this is Good Friday (Christianity, 2011).

Which brings me to re-listen to the great revelation of my generation: Jesus Christ Superstar (the 1970 rock opera, of course, not the movie).

    Which took me to this:

that seems to be a powerful description of the “Professional” Left.

BTW, this rock opera makes it all the more clear that we white people have no clue about the difficulties the Jews were having under Roman occupation:

Certainly, I more like “I do not fear any man – I have seen the glory of the coming of the Lord”.

  5. Thanks for that !

LOL ! That was funny. Yeah I think the Republicans are going to be in big trouble come 2012 because of their radical agenda.

I hope Harry Reid allows the Ryan budget on the floor so that the Republicans in the senate are on record for voting with it or against it.

  6. Thanks Toon – I remember the movie from way back when… Have a happy Easter this weekend and a Good Friday today.🙂

  7. I love this story. It is so exciting to watch all the work getting ready for the visit.

Toon Moene, thanks for the reminder about “Jesus Christ Superstar” and the great music. The choir at our church preformed a version of this, we had a great time. I love the music!

  8. Oh but I was told by the PL that JFK is greater than Obama because had he lived, JFK would have been able to get everything he wanted.

  9. mmmm I see dailyfail ain’t letting through the positive comments. Since this morning I have made 3 positive comments, my besty made a few positives and still they have our comments in moderation. And when we down rated the negative comments somebody at dailyfail kept uprating them again. No way like 2 seconds after we down rate a comment, it was back uprated. Good to see so many down rates and uprates coming in for the proper comments. I guess the powers that be over there can’t keep up now.

Still I wait for our positive comments though. That negative bs one that is on top was not there earlier. So they let through 3 negative comments today and still what would accumulate to 7 or 8 positives they still moderating. #DailymailFAILS

  10. Jeremy, I am with you. Funny how people look back and only see the positive. JFK gave a few great speeches, but Obama will outshine him I have no doubt. In the future Obama will become a national icon in this country.

JFK was what I always call filthy rich–he had many advantages during his life time. Obama really had no money or prestige. He is the president who will become an example to all that if you really want something, it is possible for that to happen.

PS I am not in anyway putting down JFK. I fell in love with him in 1961–not old enough to vote.

  11. Kevin, you need to explain craic…and Offaly.

But what I need to know is who is selling the Obama in Ireland poster?

  12. This is a fantastic post. The people of Moneygall must be so excited, and I am excited for them.

  13. WOW! That’s fabulous:)I remember seeing that. I also remember when my mom took me to see “Hair” and the looks we got when she brought a “kid” to see that play:)My mom was ahead of her time:)

  14. I have to say, I’m much more excited about this than I am about the royal wedding:)Which one will the MSM cover???????

  15. I agree. I love reading about history and economics. And one thing that I find interesting is presidential politics.

JFK was an intereting figure and continues to be today but like FDR his image has been made into a god like figure which is far from the truth. Especially to the far left.

JFK kept a republican from the Eisenhower administration (C. Douglass Dillon) and made him Treasury secretary. Dillion and Kennedy agreed to a tax reduction for business and individuals (which was responsible and paid for unlike modern day Republican tax cuts), and a change in Depreciation rules for business and reductions in tariffs.

He was a man who was pragmatic who took moderate positions and left positions (public housing, welfare, invetments in science- space program, civil rights, healthcare for the elderly and poor). But according to the far left you would think he was a big time communist.

  16. I guess my lovely governor does not like clean water:

TALLAHASSEE —The day after the Florida House passed a bill to ban implementation of water quality standards set by the U.S. Environmental Protection Administration, Gov. Rick Scott on Friday asked the agency to rescind a January 2009 determination that the federal rules are necessary for Florida.

Opponents of the federal requirement say the state is better equipped to decide how best to comply with the federal Clean Water Act, which is intended to manage nitrogen and phosphorous pollution of lakes, rivers, streams and bays. They say the EPA standards will be costly to implement, don’t address specific conditions of local waterways and provide little biological benefit.

    Koch Bagger!

  17. APRIL 22, 2011 Central Florida business leaders talk SunRail with Gov. Scott
Six business leaders from Central Florida met with Gov. Rick Scott on Friday to talk to him about SunRail. Scott has had the contracts for the commuter rail line around Orlando on hold since early this year.

“It wasn’t controversial,” said Kelly Cohen, a board member of the Metro Orlando Economic Development Commission of the meeting with Scott. “It was just trying to figure out how to make SunRail happen.”

She said it was the first time commission members had spoken directly to the governor about the issue. Cohen and her colleagues left the Capitol around lunch time, with some wearing bright yellow SunRail buttons and one executive wearing a red-white-and-blue Mickey Mouse lapel pin.

Scott has said he doesn’t want to move forward with the project approved by the Florida legislature until he’s certain that local governments understand their financial obligation to the 61.5-mile project.

State taxpayers will contribute at least $901 million over seven years to build the line.

Taxpayers in Volusia, Seminole and Orange counties have to pay $526 million over 30 years for construction. Local taxpayers also have to cover half the tab for any construction cost overruns, with the state picking up the other half. The state will pick up any operating shortfalls for the first seven years after the line starts running, but local taxpayers have to pay those shortfalls in years eight through 30 of operation.

Cohen said members of the economic development group are well aware of the local financial obligation. Central Florida business groups have been urging Scott to go forward with the project, saying it will boost the economy of the region.

  18. They wat to get the topic of of ryans plan, so…

Republicans are getting ready to capitalize on record prices at the pump with a May focus on oil and gasoline.

The government shutdown battle put the issue on the back burner even though prices at the pump have been rising steadily since February. Now, with President Barack Obama already on the defensive, the GOP is ready to pounce.

    http://www.politico.com/news/stories/0411/53595.html

  19. LOL Please !

Obama defensive ? Yeah like the president can control oil prices. Market forces and speculators effect the price but of course the republicans are desperate to change the topic from one thing to another.

The fact is that they are on record for voting with Paul Ryan budget plan. It’s too late to escape and they have been talking about it for weeks now.

I bet that oil and gas prices will decline toward the end of the year going into 2012 due to over speculation and they will try to change the subject again.

The Republicans are a joke of a party these days. No solutions but drill baby drill, tax cuts, and de-regulation, while detroying everything else.

  20. “On the Go” continues with
another set of terrific questions from you
Last month, I started a new “On the Go” video blog feature so I can respond directly to some of the questions I get on Facebook, Twitter, and here on Fastlane. The response has been enthusiastic, and today I’m keeping it going with another installment.

The main reason it’s been a success so far is because your questions have been great. It’s terrific to have readers who are well-informed and ready to get down into the nitty-gritty of transportation issues.

“On the Go” gives me an important opportunity to communicate directly to people who are really engaged in transportation and government.

    http://fastlane.dot.gov/2011/04/new-episode-of-on-the-go-with-ray-lahood-responds-toanother-set-of-terrific-questions-from-readers.html

    With video…

  21. You can tell that the MSM is desperate to change the topic because they are now hailing John McCain as Libbyan hero, claiming that the Libbyan rebels are “welcoming John McCain as if he were a long lost relative.” Of course, McCain is criticizing the Obama administration for not doing A, B, or C.

    PUHLEASE!

  22. Just saw the report on NBC—-saying McCain was in Libya criticizing Obama. Didn’t that used to be a big no-no? McCain is still bitter. In any case I heard the people yelling, “Obama! Obama!” during the report, and Richard Engle said there were signs on the street thanking President Obama while McCain was there. Must have made him furious.

  23. On Earth Day, Obama says US can lead on climate change
By Andrew Restuccia – 04/22/11 10:05 AM ET

President Obama said Friday that the United States can lead the world in tackling climate change by investing in clean-energy technology.

“The United States can be a leader in reducing the dangerous pollution that causes global warming and can propel these advances by investing in the clean energy technologies, markets, and practices that will empower us to win the future,” Obama said in an Earth Day proclamation.

Obama said addressing climate change “requires international leadership,” but he also stressed that greenhouse-gas emissions can be reduced with action at the local level.

“Every American deserves the cleanest air, the safest water, and unpolluted land, and each person can take steps to protect those precious resources,” Obama said. “When we reduce environmental hazards, especially in our most overburdened and polluted cities and neighborhoods, we prioritize the health of our families, and move towards building the clean energy economy of the 21st century.”

  24. I don’t understand how the PL and the far left talks up JFK like he was some liberal saint when he was pragmatic and far from perfect.

    A. He was white. B. He died before the winger left could really turn on him the way they have pretty much every Dem president.

  25. I’m seriously starting to wonder…at what point does this become flat-out treason?

  26. Incidentally, the space shuttle (Gabby Giffords in attendance) will be launched on the same day as the Royal wedding. It would seem very strange if the MSM were to cover the wedding at the expense of this event.

  27. I encourage you to watch this video

    http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/21134540/vp/#42663379

This guy is hammering Republicans on their stand on Medicare.

My favorite line is toward the end

When Chuck Todd tries to insinuate that the Democrats aren’t being consulted by the White House.

“The President and Democrats are joined at the hip on this issue. There is no daylight between us.”

    Darn right

  28. So I read that Glenn Greenwald is a far righty. He came out and said that he has no issue with Citizens United and that corporations can have as much influence as they want. And that he hoped that Democrats suffer more losses in 2012 like 2010.

And his followers still believe in this idiot.

I bet you that Hamsher, Greenwald, the Daily kos guy and the rest would rather have a Republican in office so they can get their tax cuts while making so much money whipping up anger against right wingers in power.
All of them are right wingers and it’s time that more people started calling them out.

  29. Stupid Politico talking about Obama on the deensive. The need to stop shilling for the
GOP. noticed how they always write their article about Obama.

  30. I am so glad to hear that they were shouting our president’s name. I could not bear to watch the evening news because their reporting sucks.

  31. Jeremy, when Robert Gibbs used the term “Professional Left” he was referring to right-wingers who disguise their agenda under supposedly left-wing issues to make money and to get GOP back in power, right? That’s why they got so mad at him for speaking the truth. In fact I wouldn’t be surprised if any of these “Professional Left” folks donated to some GOP congressmen in 2010.

Bradley Manning and Dan Choi, both heroes of the “Professional left” are also Republicans. Go figure.

  32. I know. And it seems like they are giving it away. There act is starting to wear off and more people are waking up to their con games.

Dan Choi was at CPAC for god’s sake laughing it up with the same cons that want to take his rights away.

I read on a blog by J Reid from poster GN that Greenwald is getting funds from conservative front gropus/ Think tanks like CATO. And not too long ago we found out that Hamsher has been working in tandem with Grover Norquist, Mark Moulitas (whatever his name is) ued to work with Henry Hyde one of the leading Republicans going after Bill Clinton during the Monica Lewinsky affair.

All of them are phony and some of them are racist. Hamsher being one and Greenwald being the other.

  33. Bob Cesca: Why Are the Republicans Afraid of President Obama?

There are several reasons why the Republicans are dithering.

First, Republican voters are more convinced about the wacky birth certificate thing than they are about their preference for a nominee. While 45 percent of Republicans believe the silly, fringe conspiracy theory that the president isn’t a citizen, 56 percent of Republicans support “none” of the candidates, with most of the frontrunners sharing single-digit support. That’s bad. 56 percent of Republicans would rather see “none of the above” than any of the current roster of would-be nominees. Simply put, Birtherism is more popular than the candidates themselves.

  34. Republicans want to capitalize on gaz prices ? Well that will help President Obama and democrats make their case about ending subsidies for oil companies…

Don’t you love the timing of PBO ? He tried to end oil subsidies in a previous budget and couldn’t. Now it could be possible, because people are paying attention. He saw the opportunity and he’s going for it.

Side note: God, I would love the DOJ to come up with proof about fraudulent speclative practices. But it could take months and it’s not an easy task.

  35. HELPPPPPPPPPPP

I believe i have a virus on my system, it’s vista total security virus, i can’t get rid of it, Can someone help me.

i also posted this on wsy,but not sure it posted.

  36. We need to storm their home district town halls to remind every voter that GOP = poverty.

  37. I have been a fan of JFK my whole life. My family were big JFK and RFK supporters (actually big Adlai Stevenson supporters as well), but I have to admit that Obama is superior on so many levels that I have to think we will no longer be thinking about JFK after this administration.

  38. Google microsoft security essentials and download. It’s free and very good. I have been using it for over 2 years and it has caught many a virus.

  39. Abso-freakin’-lutely Cool. My mom, who passed away two years ago, was a huge fan of the singing on the album and movie. We played the album every Easter.

  40. it’s telling me it’s not compatible with the version i have on my system

  42. sigh, unfortenetely i can’t seem to register for that site, i don’tknow if it is the virus or the site.

  43. Since the beginning of the year the outing of the “progressive Left” continues”

Arianna Huffington sells out the AOL, dismisses her unpaid lefty writers so she can publish press releases from Andrew Breitbart, Robert NAFTA Reich, and other think tankers.

Ed Schultz, former conservative Republican turned lefty radio host and evening scream show host now wants to embrace Trump. Coming home again.

Markos KOS Mouseketeer, runs a website to elect “more and better Democrats” until it reverts to his original role as a GOP operator wannabe and uses the site for disinformation during the 2008 campaign and as a gathering point for disaffected liberals lacking magical ponies.

Lawrence O’Donnell moves to the 8:00 hour on MSNBC and immediately decides that means Obama bashing for the “liberal” news network.

Cenk Uyghur and the Young Turks decides to become a prominent blogger so he can get on TV then get his own show and then uses the opportunity to oppose most of what he has supported to get there.

Andrew Sullivan, to rescue his karma, stands as the conscience of True Conservatives (meaning Tories) and opposes the Bush Administration since 2005, anguishing regularly on this website about how lost the GOP is and how “meep meep” Obama surpasses them all in temperament and talent. Until Libya and, coincidentally?, a move from the Atlantic to Time at which point he has a public meltdown about ethics in the Libya fight, his beard catches fire and he decides that Obama is lost and his base hates him.

Jane Hamster tries to be the voice of the rising Democratic majority of the next 20 years, so long as Hillary Clinton is in charge. Upon receiving a personal phone call from PBO that no magic unicorns are in stock and delivery may take six to eight weeks and she has suddenly decided the GOP needs help deriding every single decision of the current administration. Aided by the racists that regularly comment on her blog.

The upshot of this rant. Not only is there not a liberal media. There is not one genuine liberal media personality. Only a parade of right wingers pretending to be on our side until the bigger paycheck calls.

That is why we need this site. And why I am confident it will grow and find the audience that has been betrayed by the phonies that have populated our media.

  44. The senior bullies who clapped at the end know that their Medicare is safe (for now), and they don’t give a second thought for their children who won’t have that dignity and confidence for their own futures, and who will battle to compete with other countries not clouded by the same bigotry. Their ideological position and hatred for President Obama is paramount in their minds, and supercedes their responsibility to their fellow citizens and even their own children. It’s disgusting. And bravo to both of those people who stood up and spoke out. Bravo!

  45. Whose to say if the GOP gets this through that they would not go back and take Medicare away from those over 55 too?

  46. Spot on, Tao. These people are grifters using poutrage to feather their nests.

  47. Exactly – they promised the firefighters in Ohio that they weren’t going after their collective bargaining rights, only to flip them off once elected. Those over 55 don’t realize how defenseless they are against those with the dollars and clout. The only thing between them and catfood right now is President Obama and his resolve.

  48. He is like computers and ipods. Parts made in different countries and assembled in america.

  49. Good morning BWD,

“Dangerous Games” is a must read and something that needs to be seen by as many as possible:

    http://www.nytimes.com/2011/04/23/opinion/23sat1.html

“However, nothing sensible or mature is on the horizon. Republicans have vowed to extract more heedless spending cuts in exchange for their votes to raise the debt limit. To that end, they seem likely to demand changes to the budget process, like a balanced budget amendment to the Constitution, or spending caps.”

“Another bad idea is the spending cap proposed by two senators, Bob Corker, Republican of Tennessee, and Claire McCaskill, Democrat of Missouri. It would cap spending at around 21 percent of G.D.P., compared with about 24 percent now — which would require deep cuts like those in the House Republican budget plan. With its emphasis on spending cuts, the cap also seems intended to reduce the deficit without tax increases.

In the successful deficit reduction efforts of 1990 and 1993, budget process reforms were helpful. The key, however, was to first enact credible deficit-reduction packages — with spending cuts and tax increases — and then impose rules, like pay-as-you-go, to prevent backsliding. Process reforms alone avoid the hard work. Still, they can exert powerful political pull.

The White House and Congressional Democrats must not allow themselves to be taken hostage again.”

The ONLY way that the White House and Congressional Democrats can prevail is if we show the same courage as those seeking freedom in Syria, Egypt, Libya … we MUST HAVE THEIR BACKS. Forget the frustrate/PL – let’s mobilize all those who genuinely support our President and Democratic members of the House and Senate and make the Republicans run from ever even considering the harm they are willing to do to most Americans for the benefit of a tiny few rich folk. BTW, those rich folk need to get a clue because they truly do have the most to lose from their damnable greed.

    Thank you!

  50. I am sitting here thinking whoever is going to be president in 2016 will have pretty big shoes to fill after the awesomeness of President Barack Obama. I kinda feel sorry for him/her.

  51. I also feel like I will vote for whoever president Obama endorses. Is that bad? I trust him

  52. Yeah sorry, It might be lost in translation. For those who don’t have any Irish slang, craic is Irish for fun. “What’s the craic” is a casual greeting in Ireland meaning “what’s up.”

  53. If you are a teacher, or know a teacher, you need to ask them to watch this video clip

Obama on Education: Everyday Teachers are Doing a Heroic Job for Their Kids

To share it click on the youtube icon in the lower right corner of the video, then select “share” and finally use the Facebook, twitter, email or embed links to spread this around.

As a teacher, this is one of my favorite parts of his education speech.

    Happy Saturday

  54. Oh Piddle, I pasted in the wrong clip, lets try this again. That was the budget approach that deals with cutting Defense spending.

    This is the education clip.

For talking points or full text of the sound bytes go to whatisworking.com they are the top stories.

  55. One more and then I have to get back to work editing video.

My latest strategy is to have a story that is not about President Obama, and then add a clip of the President talking about that topic.

So today I have a story

Oil Companies Lied: California’s Climate Change Law Will Create Jobs

At the end of the story I have a 3 minute sound byte about green energy and jobs.

As folks post stories to this blog, I will try and suggest video clips they could also send folks to or if they write a blog video clips they could add to their stories.

I am hoping this could get folks who are reading stories that aren’t necessarily about politics to have a little glimpse of the President. An audience we may not normally reach.

My ultimate goal would be to have a database where all of you folks can search the clips from any subject like “seniors, medicare, green jobs, auto industry”

    Off to edit video.

    http://www.whatisworking.com/2011/04/oil-companies-lied-californias-climate.html

  56. The thing about JFK’s generation of Kennedys is that they believed that the wealthy owed something to society for being blessed.

  57. You mean the same msm that forgets that old man McCain was meeting with Kadaffi a couple of years ago to sell him armaments?

  58. My ultimate goal would be to have a database where all of you folks can search the clips from any subject like “seniors, medicare, green jobs, auto industry”

What a great and useful idea! Please include date and context (location/audience) for the clip or a link to the full speech if available.

  59. That came out a little more “Six Million Dollar Man” than you probably intended🙂
