The Mishmash

1. Dude, look at this:

Unemployment benefit applications dropped 388,000, the fewest since July 2008

2. And this:

Pending Sales of U.S. Existing Homes Rose 3.5% in November

3. And how about this?

Business Activity in U.S. Grows at Fastest Pace in Two Decades

4. When the president is back from Hawaii on Tuesday, he’ll have quite a list of bills to sign – which means ceremonies and photos and all that fun. 😉 Some of the bills:

–  The 9/11 first  responders health care bill.

– The defense authorization bill.

– The food safety reform act.

–  The National Alzheimer’s Project Act.

 – The America COMPETES Act. (bill aimed at increasing U.S. competitiveness in science and technology fields).

5. Yesterday, in Hawaii, the president was busy:

President Obama Makes Six Recess Appointments & Signs 4 Laws In Hawaii

6. You just know that this is the president’s top 10, right? 😉

7. I know that everyone probably saw this already, but this quote from Merle Haggard should be repeated:

It was also nice to meet Obama and find him very different from the media makeout. It’s really almost criminal what they do with our President. There seems to be no shame or anything. They call him all kinds of names all day long, saying he’s doing certain things that he’s not. It’s just a big old political game that I don’t want to be part of. There are people spending their lives putting him down. I’m sure some of it’s true and some of it’s not. I was very surprised to find the man very humble and he had a nice handshake. His wife was very cordial to the guests and especially me. They made a special effort to make me feel welcome. It was not at all the way the media described him to be.

He’s not conceited. He’s very humble about being the President of the United States, especially in comparison to some presidents we’ve had who come across like they don’t need anybody’s help…..

8. See? this is what I mean. Look at this great link I just got in the mail. This is the sort of stuff we need to chase and publish. There’s a whole world of progress that no one knows of. (I’m not sure if the senders wants me to credit them, but if you do – please let me know).

EPA details ‘historical’ bay plan

RICHMOND — The Environmental Protection Agency outlined a plan Wednesday to restore the Chesapeake Bay, calling the 64,000-square-mile water pollution control project the largest ever undertaken in the United States.

The restoration plan involves individual agreements with six states and the District of Columbia to sharply reduce the flow of pollutants and sediments that have choked the bay and crippled it environmentally. The states and the district are part of the bay’s watershed, which includes 17 million people.

The goals are to be achieved by 2025.

With the backing of President Barack Obama, the EPA is shepherding the restoration plan because of the lack of progress throughout the years by the individual states to protect or restore the bay

  1. Totally OT….but

All these pics of the President in those golfing togs and seeing some remarks about his legs, I’m wondering if those legs might just be the Kenyan runner genes.

I’m thinking of all the people from Kenya that win races with their long, strong legs. Do you think that’s a possibility?

  2. Again, thank you BWD for bringing us this fantastic space. A great collection of info and imagery and a great president.

  3. That America Competes Act is more evidence of this POTUS taking the long view and building the infrastructure needed to get this country back on the right track. Thanks for the terrific mismash.

  4. He also signed the Helping Heroes Keep Their Homes Act of 2010 into law yesterday. It extends help for servicemen and women facing foreclosure for two more years.

  5. Wow; it’s hard to keep up with the accomplishments of this administration. Thanks, eclectablog!

  6. I did my part too, dotster. After being unemployed for 16 months I started working again in August. So unlike Christmas ’09, I was able to splurge on a few fun items for the kids, not just boring essentials. Probably $200 more than last year.

  7. Thank you very much for this wonderful website. I am greateful that I can read about POUTS without the hatred that is going around in other so-called liberal sites

  8. Thank YOU, blackwaterdog! 🙂

Love visiting here and other friendly blogs every day for encouraging, real examples of the progress being made. Things that should headlined and applauded, yet rarely make more than a 2 inch blurb on page 19 of the newspaper.

  9. Major issue on the economy in the coming months will be State bankruptcies. GOP will make a stand on any more State aid, and then will have the Republican governors file for bankruptcy for the State to break the State worker union contracts.

With the GOP willing to hold the whole economy hostage, theyy’ll also use it to blackmail in the sense that the economy is ultimately tied to President Obama. And as McConnell has said, his ultimate mission is to see Obama defeated in 2012 and the best way to to that it to keep the eonomy hurting.

The Dems really need to push McConnell’s statement. If there is any vid of him saying it, it should be out in OFA e-mailings to spread it far and wide.

  10. I was hoping that more containers were going out rather than in, but what the heck, the imports mean jobs, too.

“But none gained as much traffic as Los Angeles and Long Beach, which together handled 20.3% more cargo boxes than in 2009. Cargo traffic through the twin ports grew by 2.4 million containers, for a total of about 14.2 million for 2010, including estimated December cargo movement. Line up the year’s tally of 20-foot containers and there would be more than enough to circle the globe twice. Stack them and they would reach higher than a geosynchronous satellite.”

  11. This is where Obama and his team need to play offense on this dilemma with each states budget. You see they think they can cut jobs, hurt middle class and poor folks and think that will hurt obama and help them in 2012 but hopefully they won’t be able to get away with it. One thing they forget is that blaming obama worked the past 2 years cause they were all in charge, but now it is a divided government and they will be held accountable. They promised jobs, now WHERE ARE THE JOBS?

Obama also will be out of washington a lot to different states/cities/districts and if something is happening that he knows will hurt jobs, economy in that state that he isn’t doing but the GOP in that state is doing, I am sure he will point it out to the voters CLEARLY. For example if he ever goes to Wisconsin he can point out over and over again their DUMB ASS GOVERNOR just killed thousands of jobs cause his ideology ruled over pragmatism in bringing jobs to that state. Don’t blame me if your governor killed potential jobs.

He and his team need to play smart these next 2 years. If GOP governors are slashing jobs/pensions/unions etc he needs to make it ABUNDANTLY clear that it is isn’t him doing this but their REPUBLICAN ELECTED OFFICIALS they just voted in on November 2, 2010. He needs needs to point the fingers square in their directions for anybody in these states who are being laid off, or worse pensions slashed, medicaid dropped, etc. Keep blaming the elected official IN THAT STATE!

  12. Absolutely spot on. Dick Gregory actually published a note saying precisely that before the elections: he suggested that the GOP usher in state bankruptcies in order to break up powerful state employees’ unions. I’m so utterly agreed that Dems need to put up a united front against these plans and use precious TV allotted to them to discuss this.

  13. LoL no it’s not!! most of the Kenyan runners come from a tribe that lives in the rift valley(Kalejin). The president’s father is from a tribe that lives by lake Victoria (LUO)they are known for being smart, some how they make it to Harvard,Oxford and Cambridge

  14. bwd, ot, but you might want to feature Frank Schaeffer’s new comment on Sticky: I’m grateful in a special post. It’s a goodie, and I don’t want anyone to miss it.

  15. Signing on for the first time to say a big and heartfelt ‘Thank you!’ It feels great to have a site where I know the MESSAGE will be positive. No-one is perfect, but I do feel the President is doing a terrific job, and it always annoys me to have people dumping on him. You have created a wonderful, factual breathing space. Kudos to you!

  16. The White House’s regulatory work already has stirred outrage among Republicans and business groups, which argue the White House is trying to enact policies through regulatory action after failing to win support from Congress.

These include greenhouse gas standards, the Federal Communications Commission’s (FCC) net-neutrality rules and the inclusion of advanced care planning in a Medicare rule after a similar provision was scrapped from the administration’s healthcare overhaul when Republicans said the provision would create government-run “death panels.”

  17. I think the trick in pointing out the cruelty and foolishness of Republicans is that it also points out the foolishness of those who vote FOR Republicans. Hard to solicit votes from people while you’re calling them idiots. I think he’s going to have to educate people on who is responsible for the people’s decline, rather than call out Republicans. Look at the quote from Merle Haggard – he was confused when he found the real man who is President to be completely unlike the ogre he had been led to believe he was. Many people are just lazy mentally, and they don’t connect circumstances in their lives to the votes that they’re casting (or not casting, as the case may be). Tricky line to straddle.

  18. I think we should be gearing up to flood the media with everything we’ve got to force them to cover the stories.

Just a month before the Republicans take over we are getting great news on the economy. If they try to do this, I think we the people will have to help the president push back and show them for what they are.

  19. Well they’re not going to be able to do anything legislatively (Senate will block anything from the house) and they’re not winning in the courts where the EPA is concerned, e.g.: Texas Home Alone: Another Court Rejects Challenge to Coming Carbon Standards

Court denies attempt to block EPA climate rules

  20. And a few others:

    -H.R. 6398, which provides for permanent Federal deposit insurance coverage for Interest on Lawyers Trust Accounts, the interest earned on which is used by States to support legal aid for low-income individuals;

    -H.R. 6517, the “Omnibus Trade Act of 2010,” which extends the Andean Trade Preference Act Trade Adjustment Assistance;

-S. 3386, the “Restore Online Shoppers’ Confidence Act,” which protects online consumers from unfair and deceptive sales tactics on the Internet by: (1) requiring companies that offer goods or services on other companies’ websites to meet certain requirements before charging consumers’ financial accounts; (2) prohibiting companies from transferring their customers’ billing information to companies that are offering goods or services on their websites; and (3) requiring companies that use “negative options” (i.e., require consumers to take an affirmative action to reject goods or services) to meet certain minimum requirements; and

-S. 4058, “Helping Heroes Keep Their Homes Act of 2010,” which extends enhanced protections for service members relating to mortgages and mortgage foreclosures through December 31, 2012.

  21. It’s about time! I remember how many millions of Americans were saying that PBO hadn’t been to the Gulf when by the time they were saying it, he had already visited the region 3 times. I also know that had any major emergency arose during the time PBO has been in HI, the media would have battered him almost to death about it. I recall that many in the MSM felt that the president had waited too long (2 days?) to address the Christmas bomber issue, but they said nothing about GWB waiting 5 days to address Katrina or celebrating McCain’s birthday while New Orleaneans suffered/died.

  22. Well, I guess that now Palin and her minions will learn what it means to have a president who was also a constitutional law professor. She used it in a derogatory manner to score political points, but now she’ll get a real life lesson in what it actually means. Our president is one smart cookie.

  23. I love BWD I just love her. I agree with everything you trying to do. Stay focused, stop food-fighting or backbitting. Let’s just talk about what we did, what we will do and how we go up and forward. Clear and simple!

    Up with this Prez.!!
    Up with this site!!
Up with all of us, we are in this together. Mercy!!

  24. Im looking forward to 2011. I’ve been unemployed since August 10, i have a good feeling something good is coming my way. I am very excited and blessed that i have unemployment insurance and the extention was passed.

  25. Frank Schaffer I think he was the one that told Chris Matthews, Never underestimate President Obama. I have to see a picture of him. He was so right on that statement.

  26. I would like to draw everyones attention to a new Obama administration website They are asking people to take a challenge and make a difference in their community. It is a collection of government agencies looking for ways to innovate by allowing the public to get involve and submit proposals to make government work effeciently. Many agencies offer a monetary for the best ideas. One program in particular caught my attention “Five Million In Five Years” The DHHS would like to enroll uninsured children in the medicaid and SCHIP program. The SCHIP program has been funded until 2014 but not many families are taking advantage of the program. Enrolling kids who are eligible would be a great way to blunt the Republicans effort to defund healthcare. The more families are aware of what is at stake the more public support we generate for Obamacare.

Today, I found out that my state is the fifth in the nation with uninsured children. 2011 I will think of ways to spread the word and encourage families to enroll their children in the program. I will be thinking through how this can be done and post my proposal on the website. If you get a moment check it out, and if anyone would like to make a difference this is a great way to help the president. I admire the Obamas because they always volunteer and ask people to do the same.

  27. Best way I would think would be to donate flyers to a school to be sent home with the kids alerting the parents to SCHIP with a big note at the bottom not to throw the flyer away but pass it on to a friend whose child also may not be insured. Make it simple with simple instructions on how to enroll the kids and skip over the regulation-ese type thing. One school at a time can enroll a lot of kids.
